«Breaking News» Canadian man is found to be carrying 5,000 live leeches in his luggage

A man who brought 5,000 live leeches into Canada will appear before a court in Toronto next month to face charges in connection with the bizarre discovery.

No details have been released about the man who was found with the live contraband at Toronto Pearson International Airport on October 17 last year.

A beagle helped alert authorities that something was amiss when the Canadian man came through the airport following a trip to Russia, as first reported by National Geographic.

The leeches, consisted of two species, the southern medicinal leech and the European medicinal leech. They were discovered in hundreds of containers stored in the man's luggage.

Authorities are calling the man 'an alleged illegal leech importer.'

He is due to appear in court in Toronto on February 15 charged with illegally importing an internationally regulated species without required permits, Manager of Intelligence for the Wildlife Enforcement Directorate at Environment and Climate Change Canada, Ontario Region, André Lupert, told National Geographic.

Leeches as medicine

Leeches as medical helpers go back to ancient Egypt

Blood-sucking leeches only suck about a teaspoon of blood and when they're full they naturally fall off.

Out of all the species of leeches, only a small number have a taste for human blood - the southern medicinal leech and the European medicinal leech fall into that category.

Leeches consume pooled blood and are said to remove toxins and improve circulation.

The FDA approved leeches as a medical device in 2004.

Leech therapy or hirudotherapy has gained renewed favor in the medical community in recent years.

They can live more than a year without food.

The man is not charged with smuggling as there is no evidence he was deliberately hiding the leeches.

When questioned, the man said he was transporting them for personal use and 'that their waste water would enrich his orchids,' Lupert said.

However, Lupert isn't convinced. 'This sort of leech quantity would suggest it was for commercialization,' he added.  They can sell for around $10 each.

Leeches are parasitic worms, that have been used for centuries to treat ailments that were believed to be caused by an excess of blood.

They are used in hospitals, burn units and plastic surgery centers around the world.

In the last couple of decades hirudotherapy or leech therapy has gained renewed favor with doctors and healers.

The FDA approved leeches for medical use in 2004 after they were found to help reattach amputated body parts.

Leech bites may cause infection in some circumstances but this is mitigated by the use of prescribed antibiotics.

As to the fate of the leeches discovered in Toronto airport, authorities are still trying to re-home them.

There is a chance that the judge in the February 15 case could want to view the leeches in person because they are evidence, Lupert said.

To date 50 of the leeches have been re-housed by the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto.

The American Museum of Natural History in New York has taken 1,000, once formal export and import paperwork were drawn up.

That means officials still need to find homes for the remaining 3,950 leeches.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
