«Breaking News» Maggie Gyllenhaal BACKS James Franco after Busy Philips accused him of assaulting her

Actor Maggie Gyllenhaal spoke out on the misconduct allegations against James Franco on Tuesday, saying she takes them 'very seriously' - but also that everyone on the set of their HBO show The Deuce feels 'totally respected by him'.

Talking to Sway Calloway on his daily radio show Sway in the Morning on SiriusXM, Gyllenhaal, 40, explained how, as a producer on the The Deuce, she felt compelled not to ignore the allegations against Franco when they broke in January.

As a result she asked all the women on the set whether they felt comfortable with him - which they all did.

Her intervention comes just one day after Busy Philipps, who starred in the 1999-2000 sitcom Freaks & Geeks with Franco, claimed he assaulted and bullied her on set.

'I felt it was my responsibility to do the opposite of ignore it,' Gyllenhaal said of the spate of allegations against Franco that broke earlier this year.

'At the time that the accusations against James came out in the LA Times, we read them all, we took them very seriously.

'We spoke to every woman on the crew and in the cast to find out if they felt respected and what their experience of working with James was and everyone said that they had been totally respected by him.'

Gyllenhaal went on to say how she felt cancelling the hit show would have been the wrong reaction - given misogyny is the entire premise of the plot.

'Another thing that was really important was our show is about misogyny,' she explained.

Gyllenhaal backed Franco, saying although she believed in 'consequences for disrespecting or assaulting women', he seemingly had not done so while she had worked with him on The Deuce

'It's about transactional sex. It's about inequality in the entertainment business. You couldn't be more at the center of that conversation than The Deuce.

'To me, I thought, "I want to keep telling this story. I want to keep playing Candy and going deep into what it's like from a woman's perspective to be dealing with all the stuff that is on everybody's minds right now. I want to put it on TV"

'I think I would have been so sorry not to be able to keep doing that and also not to be able to watch Emily Meade, who plays Lori, keep doing that [and] to watch Dominique, who plays Darlene, keep doing it and to watch all of these women who are creating these incredible characters that are taking it on straight on,' she continued.

'I feel like it would've been the wrong consequence to those accusations to shut our show down. It would've been, like, the opposite of the right thing to do.

'And yet I believe that there should be consequences for disrespecting or assaulting women. Of course I do.'

Only yesterday actor Busy Philipps claimed that James Franco assaulted her on the set of 1999-2000 TV sitcom Freaks & Geeks, writing in her forthcoming book that the actor physically attacked in front of the cast and crew.

She makes the claim inThis Will Only Hurt a Little, out October 16, claiming he aggressively pushed her to the ground in reaction to a scripted gesture he apparently didn't like.

Philipps writes that she was directed to gently hit Franco on the chest as she delivered a line but he broke character and shouted at her before shoving her, reports RadarOnline

'He grabbed both my arms and screamed in my face, 'DON'T EVER TOUCH ME AGAIN!'' the book details. 'And he threw me to the ground. Flat on my back. Wind knocked out of me.'

Philipps, now 39, says that although witnesses rushed to help her up and co-star Linda Cardellini told her to notify her manager, Franco was never properly reprimanded.

The TV and movie star apologized after the director and producers ordered him to do so.

Freaks & Geeks only ran for 18 episodes and had numerous directors and producers including Judd Apatow, comedian Josh Elvis Weinstein and it was created by Paul Feig.

At a time when Dawson's Creek was already airing but her character had yet to appear on the series, it was Philipps' biggest role to date.

Franco, now 40, also had a few minor roles on his acting credentials including screen time in Never Been Kissed.

During his career he has been accused of sexual misconduct at least five times but says the allegations are 'not accurate'.

Late last month, Philipps said that she was left bloodied and bruised after a 17-year-old boy from her high school sexually assaulted her in the back of his car when she was just 14.

She made the claim on Instagram late last month, posting her story while Dr. Christine Blasey Ford testified that she was sexually assaulted by Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee.

'This is me at 14. The age I was raped,' wrote Philipps, who posted a photo of herself from that time.

'It's taken me 25 years to say those words.'

Philipps was a freshman in high school and living in Arizona at the time, four years before she would head to Hollywood and became a household name.

She is now married to writer and director Marc Silverstein and the couple have two children, Birdie, 10, and 6-year-old Cricket.

'I wrote about it in my book. I finally told my parents and sister about it 4 months ago,' wrote Philipps.

'Today is the day we are silent no more. All of us. I'm scared to post this. I can't imagine what Dr. Ford is feeling right now.'

This Will Only Hurt a Little is set for release just ahead of the premiere of Phillips' new E! talk show.

Philipps has long been a very vocal supporter of the #MeToo and Time's Up movements, using her social media platforms to promote the cause.

She attended the Golden Globes with Tarana Burke, the creator of #MeToo, when Philipp's best friend Michelle Williams took both women to the Golden Globe Awards earlier this year as her dates.

Speaking out: 'I wrote about it in my book. I finally told my parents and sister about it 4 months ago. Today is the day we are silent no more,' declared Philipps (above with husband Marc Silverstein in September)

In November, when Olivia Munn came forward to claim that she once walked into a trailer to find Brett Ratner staring at her while masturbating, Philipps quickly corroborated her friend's statement in the wake of the director's denial.

'Olivia Munn has been saying this for years and he has been disgusting about the allegations and to her for years. He is a garbage human,' stated Philipps.

She then expressed shock over Ratner's Warner Brothers deal, writing: 'Brett Ratner has a 450 MILLION dollar deal at WB? A man who's reputation is that of a letcherous creep AT BEST. Plus, he makes s***** movies.'

Philipps quickly added: 'Before you say,'BUT BUSY, you've BEEN in s***** movies!' MAYBE I HAVE. But I'm not jacking off on girls and making millions in the process.'

And when Louis C.K. issued an apology after he was accused of masturbating in front of unsuspecting women, she wrote: 'I haven't read the Louis CK statement because I don't really give a F*** what he has to say about this.'

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
