«Breaking News» Theresa May tells of her goddaughter's death from cancer

Theresa May has told how the death of her goddaughter from cancer made her determined to fund the battle against the disease.

The Prime Minister's voice broke with emotion as she told the hall at the party's conference in Birmingham how cancer had touched her life.

She said: 'Cancer can strike any of us at any time. A few years ago my goddaughter was diagnosed with cancer.

'She underwent treatment and it seemed to be working, but then the cancer came back.

'Last summer, she sent me a text to tell me she was hoping to see another Christmas, but she didn't make it.

She continued: 'Half of us will be diagnosed with cancer, all of us know someone who has been.

'Survival rates are increasing, but we're lagging behind other countries, so today I can announce a new cancer strategy.'

She said she wants to increase early detection rates and make sure doctors have the most up to date equipment to tackle the disease.

In a more personal speech than the public have become used to from Mrs May, she also praised the NHS for the treatment she received for her diabetes.

Mrs May also told the conference that Communities Secretary James Brokenshire received 'outstanding' NHS care when he was treated for cancer.

She said the NHS embodies the principles of the Conservatives and announced a new cancer strategy funded through money to mark the service's 70th birthday.

Mrs May said: 'The key to boosting your chance of surviving cancer is early diagnosis.'

She added: 'We will increase the early detection rate from one-in-two today, to three-in-four by 2028.'

She said the age for screening for bowel cancer would be lowered from 60 to 50 and more would be invested in the latest scanners.

More rapid diagnostic centres will be built, she added, in what she called a 'step-change in how we diagnose cancer'.

'It will mean that by 2028, 55,000 more people will be alive five years after their diagnosis compared to today. Every life saved means precious extra years with friends and family.'

Responding to the speech, Macmillan Cancer Support’s Moira Fraser said: 'An early diagnosis can make a radical difference to someone’s survival chances, treatment options and quality of life, and ambitions set out by the Prime Minister today have real potential to improve, and even save, lives.

'But to fulfil pledges like these tomorrow, we must address fundamental challenges in cancer care today, and without a costed plan to grow and sustain numbers of doctors and nurses to deliver these aims, it simply will not be possible.'

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
