«Breaking News» Twitter tests new tools like 'icebreakers' and 'status updates' to promote healthy conversation

Twitter is taking steps toward becoming a place where users can have healthy conversations.

The social media giant announced at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas that it will soon allow users to apply to become a part of a beta program where they can test out a range of features, according to Engadget.

In the future, all users might see features like 'icebreakers' or status indicators that show when others are online appear on their timeline.

Twitter will start letting users apply to the beta program in the next few weeks.

However, while anyone can apply to be a part of it, Twitter is only going to select a few thousand users to take part.

Once users are accepted into the beta program, they'll get to test out and give feedback on a range of features.

Twitter will then go through and review that feedback to determine whether or not the features ship out sitewide.

'We want to develop a service for the people that are using it, and we have to involve people in that way,' Sara Haider, director of product management at Twitter, told Engadget.

'We have a platform that the world uses to speak their mind, why not use that as part of our development process?'

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey confirmed the testing program. Dorsey previously announced Twitter was partnering with outside firms to assess the 'health of public conversation' on the site

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey confirmed the testing program in a tweet late Tuesday.

Earlier this year, Twitter said it was testing features to encourage healthy conversation on its platform.

Now, with the beta program, it's making good on that promise.

Those features are expected to include things like 'icebreakers' that would let users pin a question to their profile about a topic they care about as a way to start casual conversation with other users.

Other features like status indicators would show when a user is online, so that their followers know and they can start chatting.

So far, it seems the beta program won't involve tests of an edit button.

Haider told Engadget that Twitter is also exploring new features that build off of user behavior already observed on the platform.

For example, users often change their display name to show others when they're at an event, such as 'Jack is at Defcon.'

WHAT ARE TWITTER'S POLICIES?

Graphic violence and adult content

The company does not allow people to post graphic violence.

This could be any form of gory media related to death, serious injury, violence, or surgical procedures.

Adult content - that includes media that is pornographic and/or may be intended to cause sexual arousal - is also banned.

Some form of graphic violence and adult content is allowed in Tweets marked as containing sensitive media.

However, these images are not allowed in profile or header images.

Twitter may sometimes require users to remove excessively graphic violence out of respect for the deceased and their families.

Unlawful use

The platform is not allowed to be used to further illegal activities.

Badges

Users are not allowed to use badges, including but not limited to the 'promoted' or 'verified' Twitter badges, unless provided by Twitter.

Accounts using unauthorised badges as part of their profile photos, header photos, display names, or in any way that falsely implies affiliation with Twitter or authorisation from Twitter to display these badges, may be suspended.

Usernames

Users may not buy or sell Twitter usernames.

Username squatting - when people take the name of a trademark company or a celebrity - is not allowed.

Twitter also has the right to remove accounts that are inactive for more than six months.

Abusive behaviour

Context matters when evaluating for abusive behaviour and determining appropriate enforcement actions.

Factors we may take into consideration include whether the behaviour is targeted at an individual; the report has been filed by the target of the abuse or a bystander or the behaviour is newsworthy and in the legitimate public interest.

Users may not make specific threats of violence or wish for the serious physical harm, death, or disease of an individual or group of people.

This includes, but is not limited to, threatening or promoting terrorism.

Users may not promote or encourage suicide or self-harm. Users may not promote child sexual exploitation.

Users may not direct abuse at someone by sending unwanted sexual content, objectifying them in a sexually explicit manner, or otherwise engaging in sexual misconduct.

Users may not use hateful images or symbols in your profile image or profile header.

Private information

Users may not publish or post other people's private information without their express authorisation and permission.

Users may not post or share intimate photos or videos of someone that were produced or distributed without their consent.

Users may not threaten to expose someone's private information or intimate media.

With a status update feature, users might be able to pin their current location to the top of their profile, similar to the old-fashioned instant messenger statuses of yesteryear.

Other features should make Twitter easier to use and navigate overall, Haider added.

'We're making some pretty big changes to the way conversations look and feel on Twitter, and we don't want to just unveil that one day and what if you don't like it or it's not working for you?,' she told Engadget.

'We really want to bring our community along for this journey and be a part of this.'

The changes are part of Twitter's broader effort to crackdown on hate speech and abuse on its platform - something users and experts alike have complained about in the past.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
