Retired Marine Corps Gen. Anthony Zinni, who President Donald Trump picked as a special envoy to handle issues with Qatar, has resigned because he couldn't find a solution to the problem.
He is the latest four-star general to leave the administration, following chief of staff John Kelly and Defense Secretary James Mattis.
Zinni told CBS News that he could not find a solution to the issues surrounding Qatar 'because of the unwillingness of the regional leaders to agree to a viable mediation effort that we offered to conduct or assist in implementing.'

The retired four-star general took on the assignment at the request of then-Defense Secretary Jim Mattis and then-Secretary of State Rex Tillerson - both of whom have since left the administration.
Zinni and Mattis are long time personal friends, Task & Purpose reported.
When asked whether his resignation was connected to Mattis' resignation, Zinni told the military news website that he 'was disappointed by what happened, but it didn't really affect [my] resignation.'
'Jim Mattis is a great friend of mine and he was the right guy for the job,' Zinni said, adding that, although Mattis first approached him to take the envoy role, Zinni had been getting 'plenty of support from [Secretary of State] Mike Pompeo and [National Security Advisor] John Bolton.'
A senior State Department official described Zinni's departure to CBS as a 'soft resignation.'
The end of Mattis' tenure in the Trump administration came when the Pentagon chief left in protest after the president announced he was pulling out U.S. troops from Syria, which the two men disagreed about.
Mattis offered a resignation letter on December 20 that was seen as a dig at his commander-in-chief.
'Because you have the right to a Secretary of Defense whose views are better aligned with yours on these and other subjects,' Mattis wrote in his letter, 'I believe it is right for me to step down from my position.'
And he ensured it would be seen. He ordered aides to distribute 50 copies of it.
The move - and the media coverage of his letter - pushed him out the door even faster.
A scant three days later, on Dec. 23, Trump announced Mattis was leaving his administration on January 1 amid his anger at how the resignation letter was received.
Zinni, a former Middle East envoy, was brought in to try and manage the diplomatic crisis surrounding Qatar.
A Saudi Arabia-led coalition ended diplomatic relations with Qatar and claimed the nation had violated a 2014 agreement with the members of the Gulf Cooperation Council.
The group started an international crisis when it blocked trade to Qatar and accused the country of aiding terrorists, which Qatar has denied.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.
Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
