«Breaking News» Sara Cox 'no longer close to former pal Zoe Ball after losing out on BBC Radio 2 Breakfast Show'

Zoe Ball and Sara Cox have reportedly drifted apart following the battle for the coveted BBC Radio 2 Breakfast Show gig.

According to The Sun, the pair are 'no longer closer' after Zoe, 48, landed the job and was announced as Chris Evans' replacement as he returned to Virgin Radio - making her the first women to take on the role.

Sara, 44, was said to be expecting the gig after having previously stood in for Chris over the years - and was left 'completely gutted' after the announcement that Zoe had bagged the honour, according to the publication.

However, despite the speculation, a BBC source told MailOnline: ‘This is a purely speculative piece.’

Ball snagged the slot while Cox, 44, was confirmed as the new host of Radio 2’s Drivetime.

And the claims of a fading friendship comes in complete contrast to Zoe recently mentioning that they have always supported each other in their careers.

Zoe told the Radio Times: ‘We spoke a lot during the whole process. We’re old buddies and we’ve always been really supportive of each other. Sometimes she gets jobs I’ve wanted. We always talk. It worked out.’

Following the news about Zoe's new role last year, Sara cheekily played Shaggy's It Wasn't Me track on her evening show on Wednesday, before sending her congratulations.

She told her listeners: 'Congratulations to Zoë Ball, she is taking over of course from Chris Evans: she’s been given the plum role of my breakfast show holiday cover.

'So basically this is how it works. I’ve got the Breakfast Show, I just do ten weeks a year because I’m busy doing other stuff, and it is early. So I do ten weeks, and she’ll cover the other 42 weeks when I’m off on holiday sunning myself somewhere nice', she added.

'So congratulations to Zoë, I’m absolutely thrilled for her, that’s very nice. I did know for a couple of weeks or so that Zoë had it, but I managed to keep it secret.'

Sara and Zoe were very close during the 1990s, holidayed together and were bridesmaids at each other's weddings, however, Sara admitted they had drifted apart and lost touch.

In 2016, Sara told The Mirror: 'We’re not ‘not friends’ but we just lost touch. It’s a bit sad, but she’s down in Brighton and has a family of her own too so it’s not as easy to stay in touch, although our paths do sometimes cross.'

Meanwhile, Strictly Come Dancing: It Takes Two host Zoe recently spoke on her forthcoming position: 'I'm absolutely thrilled to be following in the giant footsteps of Chris Evans as the host of the Radio 2 Breakfast Show.

'To be the first woman to present this very special show is both an honour and privilege.

'Believe me, I'm not under-estimating the enormity of the task ahead, to follow not one but two of my broadcasting idols into such a well-loved show is somewhat daunting.

'But I hope, in the same way that Chris made this show his own after taking over from the wonderful Sir Terry Wogan, that, with a top team alongside me, I can bring the fabulous Radio 2 audience a show they want to wake up to.'

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
