«Breaking News» Parents of scout killed by falling tree sue Boy Scouts of America

The parents of a 14-year-old boy who was killed when a tree fell on his tent at a scout camp in Georgia have filed a civil lawsuit over his death.

Stephen and Courtney Knight, the parents of Elijah Knight from Cypress Texas, are suing the Boy Scouts of America and the Atlanta Area Council Inc. Boy Scouts of America for wrongful death, saying the Boy Scouts 'ignored weather advisories.'

The suit was filed in state court in Cobb County, on Tuesday, where the Boy Scouts Atlanta Area Council is headquartered.

Elijah Knight was killed on June 25, at the Bert Adams Scout Camp, near Covington in Georgia after a tree fell on the tent he was sharing with another scout during a storm, as reported by Fox 5 Atlanta

A severe thunderstorm warning had been issued at the time of Elijah's death.

'The Boy Scouts of America ignored weather advisories issued by the National Weather Service, including a Severe Thunderstorm Warning which was in effect at the time of Elijah's death,' the lawsuit says. 'Because the Boy Scouts did not evacuate all campers to a nearby building, Elijah Knight was left outdoors in a canvas tent during a hazardous storm with strong winds, lightning and hail.'

In a statement Elijah's father, Stephen Knight, said the family hope new safety standards will be put in place in the wake of his son's death.

'Having joined the horrible club of parents who have lost a child, and especially the community of parents whose child died in a scouting event, we hope to make systemic safety improvements that will preserve and protect the lives of many other children in the future. We hope to see a new level of safety standards, so no other family has to go through the same anguish,' Knight said.

The lawsuit also references other deaths at the same scout camp, one in 1999 of a Cobb County father and son and another death in 2017 of a teenager.

The family is seeking an unspecified amount in damages for funeral expenses, pain and suffering as well as punitive damages.

At the time of Elijah's death, Tracy Techau, Scout Executive, and CEO, Atlanta Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America which operates the camp, said in a statement that it was a very difficult time for the Scouting family.

'We are sad to confirm the death of one of our Scouts following a weather-related incident at Bert Adams Scout Camp. We offer our deepest condolences to the victim and his family, and we will support them in any way that we can. Please join us in keeping all those affected in your thoughts and prayers.'

Elijah, who has one brother and sister, was attending the fourth and final week of the camp. He'd achieved the rank of Life Scout and was on his way toward Eagle Scout when the tragedy happened.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
