More than 41,000 overweight people needed joint replacement operations last year as health chiefs warn of a national crisis of obesity.
Patients going for surgery to replace knees or hips has soared six-fold in just eight years, from 6,191 in 2009-2010 to 41,761 in 2017-2018.
Seven teenage girls were included in the number and the 575 per cent rise in such procedures is costing the NHS £200million a year.
Health officials called the findings of The Sunday Times investigation 'horrifying' and warned of a 'national obesity crisis'.
Theresa May and Health Secretary Matt Hancock will tomorrow launch a scheme to pump an extra £20.5billion a year into the health service by 2023-2024.
But National Obesity Forum chairman Tam Fry said that action should have been taken 'years ago' and accused successive governments of failing to act.
The investigation found that over the past year, 25,577 patients underwent hip or knee replacements in which obesity was the main or second most important factor.
And another 16,184 patients had joint replacements where obesity was given as a primary or secondary diagnosis. Seven of those were females aged between 15 and 19.
Women had about 8,000 more operations than men and the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital says that children having hip replacement surgery was rare over the last 12 months.
But obese children are significantly more at risk of suffering a severe hip disorder that can require surgery.
The Royal College of Physicians (RCP) claimed last week that as long as obesity is not recognised as a disease, rates are unlikely to go down.
Health bosses have warned that successive governments have failed to address the nation's obesity issues
A third of primary school leavers are overweight or obese and two in three are overweight or obese in adulthood.
Joint replacement surgery costs about £5,000 and there were 41,761 obesity-related replacement surgeries in 2017-18, meaning the annual cost to the NHS is higher than £200million.
British Obesity Society chairwoman Jane DeVille-Almond says parents must reduce sugar in their children's diets.
Shadow Health Secretary Jon Ashworth said that teenagers undergoing replacement surgery should 'send shock waves' through the government.
Public Health England says that obesity is 'having a serious impact both on the NHS and on individuals' health'.
The body says it is responding by working with the food industry to offer healthier diets.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.
Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
