She once claimed to be as ‘poor as it is possible to be in modern Britain, without being homeless’.
But J. K. Rowling’s story — as spellbinding as anything in her seven-volume Harry Potter series — grows more dazzling by the day.
While she has conjured up a personal fortune of £700 million, her money-making spell shows no danger of wearing off.
Accounts just published for Pottermore — the company which handles the digital publishing part of 53-year-old Rowling’s global empire — did £32.7 million worth of business in the financial year ending on March 31, 2018. In the process, it generated a pre-tax profit of £3.4m — after first paying Rowling £4.79m in royalties, as well as £134,000 to the Lumos Foundation, the charity she founded in 2005.

This, of course, is entirely separate from the mammoth pay cheque that Rowling receives from her other company, The Collections Agency Limited, whose income derives from books, films and merchandising. Its 2018 accounts have yet to be published but, in the previous year, it paid her £34 million, as I disclosed at the time.
The report accompanying the Pottermore accounts — signed by Neil Blair, Rowling’s literary agent — notes that revenue was less than in the previous year, when £40.3 million was generated, but explains that this was entirely to be expected.
‘The exceptional result in 2017 was driven by the hugely successful launch of the much anticipated Harry Potter And The Cursed Child playscript, the Fantastic Beasts And Where to Find Them screenplay and Hogwarts Library digital audio book.’ These, between them, contributed to a bonanza of ‘over £12 million’ in revenue.

The company’s prospects look no less golden for the coming year. ‘The Wizarding World franchise continues to enjoy immense popularity and Pottermore.com continues to attract and engage fans around the world,’ says the report.
It’s a far cry from the days when Rowling eked out an existence as a single mother on benefits, writing in cafes so as to escape the chill of her unheated flat.
Prince Charles’s sky-high flight bill during the Commonwealth Games has got up the noses of taxpayers Down Under.
The Aussies forked out over £100,000 for just 19 flights for the Prince and his entourage — including a dresser, butler, valet and hairdresser — to fly around Australia and Vanuatu during a ten-day royal jaunt last spring.
Their fury has been exacerbated since learning Charles was a passenger on only 11 of them. The Duchess of Cornwall joined her husband on two flights from Singapore to Wagga Wagga and then on to Brisbane at an eye-watering £21,610 before leaving Australia early.
‘This seems a very expensive visit,’ declared the Australian Republic Movement national director Michael Cooney.
‘And to have people who are staff and junior staff fly VIP unaccompanied by the prince is unreasonable.’ The full cost came to a royal £451,760 for
Gwyneth Paltrow’s teenage daughter, Apple, is catching up fast
When the Oscar winner, 46, shared a picture on social media of the 14-year-old planting a kiss on her cheek, many of her followers were quick to point out that Apple is already taller than her.
The 5 ft 9 in actress, who also has a 12-year-old son, Moses, with her ex-husband, Coldplay frontman Chris Martin, clearly has high hopes for Apple’s career.

‘She seems to be headed towards entertainment, but she said, “Well, maybe then when I’m older, I’ll run Goop”,’ says the actress, referring to the multi-million-pound lifestyle brand she founded.
Paltrow, who married screenwriter Brad Falchuk last September, adds: ‘I was like: “That would be great!” ’
Never mind the Pollocks! Punk rocker’s mishap with Archer’s £3million Monet
Was Lord Archer wise to allow a former member of punk rockers The Clash to set up his painting easel in the author’s penthouse?
And was a Monet, subsequently sold by the peer for £3 million, unwittingly damaged as a result?
Paul Simonon, bass player with the gobby group, wrote to Lord Archer asking if he could paint the panoramic view offered by the peer’s Albert Embankment pad.
Archer agreed and Simonon stayed for a week. However, the dauber, whose works fetch up to £4,000, reveals he got carried away and indulged in a spot of Jackson Pollock action painting. ‘I was chucking paint around and some went a bit further than I expected,’ the musician recalls. ‘I looked around and there was a Monet there, and I think a few drops went on that.
‘I did think, “Oh s**t, what do I do now? Do I rub it out and risk making it worse?” So I just left it.’
The incident occurred some years before Lord Archer sold Monet’s La Seine Pres De Vetheuil at a 2011 auction of his penthouse art collection and far exceeded the asking price of £1.2million.
Would it have sold for even more if curators had identified additional blotches from the Clash star?
- Distinguished war photographer Sir Don McCullin was put off celebrity snaps when he spent a day capturing The Beatles in 1968.
‘I did my best, and the group were good guys, but it wasn’t my cup of tea,’ he says. ‘It was all a bit inconsequential.’ John Lennon’s wife worsened the experience. ‘Yoko Ono was a nasty little bully, telling me I was standing in the wrong place,’ he adds. ‘I’d recently seen soldiers killed and maimed in front of me in Vietnam.
‘Her opinions meant as much to me as treading on a cigarette.’
Sir Mick’s ex gets snow satisfaction
Sir Mick Jagger clearly has a taste for thrill-seeking women.
Luciana Gimenez, mother of his 19-year-old son, Lucas, stripped off this week down to a white bikini in the snow.
The Brazilian TV host, 49, shared a picture of herself from her holiday in Aspen, Colorado, where temperatures don’t get much above minus 7c. ‘I couldn’t resist!’ she told her two million followers on social media.

Winter exhibitionism is something of a tradition: she has performed a similar stunt for two consecutive years. Meanwhile Sir Mick, 75, is enjoying a very different climate in sunny Mustique with his ballerina girlfriend — and mother of his eighth child, Deveraux — 32-year-old Melanie Hamrick.
Some say his own stellar performance as devoted Royal Consort will never be eclipsed.
But it has emerged that the Duke of Edinburgh will share his 100th birthday on June 10, 2021, with a solar eclipse visible across most of Britain. His grandson, the Duke of Cambridge, was also born during a rare astronomical event — a solar eclipse on the summer solstice of 1982. His wife Kate was born under a lunar eclipse in the same year. Spooky . . .
Emilia gets groovy on beach break
Silent Witness star Emilia Fox celebrated the return of the BBC series this week by titillating her fans with a rare beach snap.
The 44-year-old natural blonde, who plays a pathologist in the crime drama, sports newly dyed brown hair, crochet bikini bottoms and a jumper bearing the word ‘Groovy’.
‘A happy week of sun in Tenerife — back on some of the beaches where we filmed the episodes set in Mexico of Silent Witness,’ she captions it.
‘It was great to be over ground this time rather than buried underground!’

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.
Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
