Coronation Street star Charlie Lawson has admitted it is ‘highly likely’ he would have picked up a gun and fought in The Troubles had he not left Northern Ireland to become an actor.
Protestant Charles, 59, who has played Jim McDonald in the ITV soap on and off for the last 30 years, believes he would have joined a loyalist paramilitary group if he had been unemployed in his hometown of east Belfast.
The conflict, which started in the 1960s, saw loyalist and republican paramilitary groups fight over a 30 year period on Northern Ireland’s streets - mainly about the nation’s constitutional status.

Speaking on Eamonn Mallie's Face to Face, set to air on UTV on Tuesday, the actor said: 'I never took up arms.
'I suspect if I had stayed and not had the opportunities thrown at me and been unemployed staying up the Newtownards Road, I would say it probably would have been highly likely.'
He added: 'I didn’t meet a Catholic until I was 20 years of age – not extraordinary for the times really, when you think about it.

‘But the damage we did to ourselves as human beings and the sheer cruelty and the barbarity of both sides – of what people were willing do to other people.
‘It’s horrendous and people don’t believe it now. They are not taught about it and they should be.’
Charles also issued a public apology to his daughter Laura, 31, as he admitted he used to put 'drink, drugs and partying' before her.
The actor confessed he was 'pretty hopeless' as a father while his only child was at boarding school and also reflected on his relationship with current partner Debbie Stanley as he insisted she's changed his 'life for the better.'

Honest and open: 'I was pretty hopeless as a dad. [Boarding school] made me useless with kids. I wasn't interested at all', the Northern Irish star shared
In the upcoming episode, the Northern Irish actor candidly touched on his life as a father to former police officer Laura.
'I was pretty hopeless as a dad. [Boarding school] made me useless with kids. I wasn't interested at all.
'My grandchildren adore me and for some reason I am good with them. But for my own daughter I can offer nothing but sincerest heartfelt apologies about the way I behaved because I was so selfish.'
Charles, who has been with partner Debbie for over 10 years, previously revealed he left his family as he was 'unhappy' in his first marriage, with Laura being only seven at the time of her parents' split.

The My Mother and Other Strangers star added: 'I left home because I was having a good time.
'I cared more about drink and drugs and having fun than I did with my family which is a disgusting thing to have to admit but unfortunately that is the truth. I am trying to make amends for it now.'
Meanwhile, Charles recently broke down in tears as he recalled the devastating moment he suffered a mini stroke on the opening night of Rebus: Long Shadows in early October.
Recalling his transient ischaemic attack, he confessed on Good Morning Britain: 'I was in the middle of the second half and I just collapsed. I went deaf, then I went blue and saw bright lights.

'I get emotional talking about it [holds back tears]. The psychiatrist says I have to talk about it. I honestly didn’t know where I was.
'The neck scan was fine, MRI scan showed I had a TIA. So when I finish the play I have to reassess my life.'
A TIA, also known as a mini-stroke, occurs when blood flow to the brain is momentarily disrupted, causing numbness in the face, arms and legs which usually resolves within a few minutes.
They are usually considered a short-term issue and are often dismissed as exhaustion, a migraine or a ‘funny turn’, however research previously conducted by the University of Birmingham suggested that mini-strokes can be problematic in themselves, causing lasting cognitive impairment, depression and fatigue.
Surprised by his emotional reaction, Charlie said: 'I spoke to this doctor and said, "Why am I upset about this?" He said, "If you break your leg, you break your leg. If something goes wrong with the computer [points to his head], it can disturb you".'
He added: 'I’m going to have to take some time just to reassess my life, which is a shock Piers [Morgan], because you know, I like life.'
The actor also teased the possibility of Jim McDonald's return to the cobbles, admitting bosses have left the door open for him.
He revealed: 'Jim is a bit of a legend. His storyline was like Marmite. Some people thought it was amazing and others thought it was rubbish.
'I could be back doing Corrie for a couple more months. They asked me about how I feel about the future and what I want to do with the character, so I had a lot more control.'

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.
Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
