«Breaking News» UK weather: 'Mini Beast from the East' will drop temperatures to 5C

Britain is set to be hit by a mini 'Beast from East' this week as cold air from Scandinavia sends temperatures plummeting.

Wintry showers will batter parts of the UK over the next couple of days bringing an end to the unseasonably warm conditions this November.

The mild southerly winds are being replaced by bitter air from northern and eastern Europe with daytime temperatures dropping to around 5C (41F), and the mercury falling to -5C (23F) in some areas overnight.

But forecasters warn that it could feel even colder because of the wind chill. They have not ruled out the chance of sleet, ice and some light snowfall in parts of the country - and there could even be thundersnow.

Steven Keates, meteorologist at the Met Office, said: 'It's going to be colder than what we've been used to, obviously, considering it's been balmy and mild as a whole.

'There's going to be a day by day cooling off, with each day getting cooler than the previous.

'There will be some cloud and showers, but the biting wind will make it feel even colder than it is, particularly in the east.

'West is best in terms of the weather this week.  There could be some snowfall in the more mountainous areas, the peaks, but we shouldn't expect too much disruption.'

Atmosphere instability and thundersnow

Thunder and lightning are more usually associated with warmer climates but under certain conditions they can occur in cold ones too.

Thundersnow starts out like a summer thunderstorm - the sun heats the ground and pushes masses of warm, moist air upward, creating unstable air columns.

As it rises, the moisture condenses to form clouds, which are jostled by internal turbulence. Lightning is caused by this rubbing of the clouds against each other - thunder is the sound of lightning but as sound moves more slowly than light we hear it later.

The tricky part for thundersnow is creating that atmospheric instability in the winter. When it is cold, and particularly in air conducive to snowfall, the lower atmosphere is dry, cold and very stable.

For thundersnow to occur there needs to be a precise set of circumstances - the air layer closer to the ground has to be warmer than the layers above, but still cold enough to create snow.

When this happens warm air rises, snow falls and thunder, lightning and snow all occur at the same time.

Meanwhile the Met Office said thundersnow was 'not out of the question tomorrow'.

Forecasters said some thunder is likely in the heavy showers, mainly in the South and South East during the morning, but also across central and south-western England into Wales later on.

The greatest chance of seeing some sleet and snow will be over the higher ground of Wales, the Pennines, and Scotland, but some brief sleet is possible to lower levels in the South East in any heavier showers.

And although the areas where the country is most likely to see thunder do not fully coincide with where sleet or snow is likely, the Met Office said some parts 'could see some heavy showers bringing a bit of both for a time'.

Met Office forecaster Greg Dewhurst added: 'It is noticeable colder today after the balmy weekend and the period of mild weather.

'Over the next 24 hours most of the country will be hit by a mixture of scattered wintry showers.

'We will have highs of 10C today, 8C tomorrow and 9C on Wednesday before the easterly winds start to be replaced by more south easterly winds, cutting off the colder weather.

'By then, temperatures will be back to around average at around 10C for this time of year. '

Last week Britain basked in an Indian summer with temperatures nudging 18C, higher than Madrid (16C) and Milan (14C).

The hottest November day recorded in the UK was 22.4C (72.3F) in Trawsgoed, near Aberystwyth in mid-Wales, on November 1, 2015.

The mild southerly...

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
