«Breaking News» Stephen Colbert reveals 'life has never been the same' after Bible verse relieved his anxiety at 22

Stephen Colbert was inspired to return to his faith after a passage from the Holy Bible delivered him from anxiety 32 years ago.

The comedian, 54, followed Catholicism but says: 'I had lost my faith in God, to my great grief.'

However the Washington DC-born star got a message from above relieving him of his worry while traveling through Chicago, aged 22, on a cold winter's day he told Faith in Focus.

 Colbert said to Father James Martin in March: 'My life has never been the same'

In the March interview which aired Thursday, The Late Show host told CBS' Father James Martin about the day in 1986 that changed his life for the better.

'I was walking down the street and somebody handed me a little, green New Testament Proverbs and Psalms,' he said.

Colbert shared how the temperature was so low he had to 'crack' book open to find a passage that would help lift his unease at a time when he was an atheist.

'And I open it up to a little glossary in the front and it said verses to read based upon if you [have] anxiety,' he added.

As someone at the time who thought he had been wrong or taught something that wasn't true, he found his way back to God by reading the section of the New Testament.

He said in a Faith in Focus interview that Matthew Chapter 5 helped his anxiety

Speaking of a verse in Matthew Chapter 5, Colbert shared how he felt 'lightened' after glancing at it.

'For do not worry, for who among you by worrying can change a single hair on his head around the keep of the span of his life?' he said resonated with him.

While it wasn't the funny man's first relationship with religion, he found new meaning in the Gospel that day.

Despite earlier being a non-believer, he told the priest he didn't even have to try to find his way back to Catholicism after that point.

'For the first time I understood the real meaning of the phrase, it spoke to me. Like it read off the page. The words of Christ read off the page. There was no effort. I stood on that street corner in the cold and read that sermon. And my life has never been the same,' Colbert said.

Colbert added in the clip that he wished young people weren't so stubborn to reject the idea of religion simply because it isn't necessarily trendy.

It was a sentiment expressed earlier on the show by his popular show's young cartoonist, Tim Luecke, who praised Colbert for encouraging people in his generation to have humility from faith even if it's not in 'style' and 'viewed with a certain scepticism'.

'This gift of religion is something that can only be given in this way,' Colbert continued about his life changing moment on the street.

'And therefore you should be humble and accept this act of love. And see what it is they gave you without rejecting it.'

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
