Amid the devastation of the deadly Camp Fire in Northern California that so far has claimed 66 lives, with hundreds more missing, sheriff's deputies on Thursday shot dead a runaway felon who at one time was suspected of killing a married couple.

Butte County District Attorney Mike Ramsey on Friday detailed the officer-involved shooting, which claimed the lives of fugitive GD Hendrix, 48, and a Sutter County police dog named Bandit.

According to Ramsey, the incident began unfolding at 11am in the parking lot of a hardware store outside the town of Paradise that was decimated by the wildfire.

A Butte County Sheriff's deputy was patrolling the area when a passerby flagged him down and told him that a car had been parked outside the Pine Yankee Hill Hardware Store for the past three days.

When the deputy went to inspect the cluttered sedan, he noticed a man sleeping in the driver's seat, reported The Washington Post.

The officer ran the vehicle's license plate number through the county database, which revealed that the car was registered to Hendrix: an armed and dangerous criminal who was being sought for skipping parole.

The deputy who was the first on the scene called for backup, and officers who responded to the parking lot surrounded Hendrix's car.

Ramsey said when the fugitive awakened, he reached for his pocket, prompting the deputies to train their guns on him.

'You guys should have let me alone,' Ramsey quoted Hendrix as yelling out to the cops. 'I'm not going back.'

The 48-year-old suspect then turned on the ignition and peeled off, leading officers on a chase southbound on Interstate 70, with speeds reaching 90mph.

Deputies used spike strips to puncture the tires on Hendrix's car, which eventually came to a stop on the freeway.

Ramsey said deputies ordered the runaway to step out of the vehicle, but initially he refused.

Hendrix ultimately complied with the officers' demands but continued holding his right hand inside his pocket, which prompted a Sutter County Sheriff's deputy on the scene to unleash a K9 dog named Bandit.

As the police dog came running towards the suspect, Ramsey said Hendrix took a metallic object out of his pocket and pointed it at the cops, six of whom opened fire on him.

Hendrix was shot multiple times, as was Bandit. Despite being mortally wounded, the police dog would not let go of the suspect. But then Hendrix's pit bull, who was in inside his car, emerged and attacked Bandit.

A seventh deputy fatally shot the pit bull.

Hendrix and the two dogs were pronounced dead at the scene from gunshot wounds. Officials said the 48-year-old fugitive was unarmed at the time of his death.

Bandit, a four-year-old Belgian Malinois, had served with the Sutter County Sheriff’s Department since January 2017 and his handler was Deputy John Lopez, reported The Appeal-Democrat.

In 2015, Hendrix was named a person of interest in the murders of Mike Kroencke, 59, and his wife, 56-yea-old Olga Kroencke, of Plumas.

The couple were found shot dead inside their SUV in the Berry Creek area in December 2014. The victims and the felon were neighbors, reported Plumas County News at the time.

A relative of the Kroenckes said that Olga had warned Hendrix several times to stay away from her mentally disabled son, to whom the suspect had been allegedly giving methamphetamines.

Just over a week after the double murder, officers executed a search warrant at a home that Hendrix shared with hie mother, where cops discovered an arsenal comprised of firearms and a pipe bomb.

In early January 2015, Butte County Sheriff's deputies tracked Hendrix down at a store on Oro Quincy Highway and apprehended him.

At the time of his arrest, the suspect was armed with an AK-47 style semi-automatic assault rifle, a revolver and a hunting pistol, all loaded.

Detectives also recovered a dagger and brass knuckles on Hendrix's person.

Hendrix was eventually convicted of possession of a destructive device and possession of methamphetamine, and sentenced to seven years in prison.

He was never charged in the Kroencke couple's killings due to insufficient evidence.

Ramsey said Hendrix was released from prison on parole in May 2018 and ordered to wear an electronic monitoring device, but in July of this year he went on a lam and was declare a parolee-at-large.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
