«Breaking News» Sir Michael Parkinson, 83, admits he is losing his memory but insists he'll 'die on stage'

Sir Michael Parkinson released a new book this week on his late friend, George Best.

And while promoting the publication, the veteran chat show host, 83, has insisted he works 'out of choice, not necessity', despite the irritating tolls of getting older.

'I will die on stage. I work out of choice, not necessity. To be able to do that is the greatest freedom,' he told The Sunday People. 'I’d be a liar if I said I found it as easy to work as I used to.

'I used to have an extraordinary memory and now I forget things. But that’s something that inevitably happens with age and a small price to pay.'

Despite being in his 80s, Sir Michael has overcome various health issues over the past decade - coming out the other side of them all, still soldiering on.

In 2013, he suffered from prostate cancer. This, however, didn't stop him continuing with the second season of his TV show, Parkinson: Masterclass, which was being recorded for Sky Arts at the time.

In recent years, ruptured discs in his back led to spinal surgery, leaving the father-of-three having to learn how to walk again.

Not slowing down: 'I used to have an extraordinary memory and now I forget things. But that’s something that inevitably happens with age and a small price to pay,' he said

Yet, the broadcasting legend has not only penned George Best: A Memoir over the past year, he has been happily working the promotional trail over the past two weeks, appearing on TV and at his book launch where he addressed his guests, as confidently as ever.

'I can’t walk like I could. I can’t dance like I could or play golf anymore. But as long as I can still work and the mind is there that’s all that matters,' he said, ever-positive.

Sir Michael fronted his eponymous series Parkinson across a four decade period, despite it being cancelled twice by the BBC and then taking it across to rivals ITV, where he aired for seven additional seasons.

In June 2007, he issued a statement that he was retiring: 'After three enjoyable and productive years at ITV, and after 25 years of doing my talk show I have decided that this forthcoming series will be my last.

'I’m going to take next year off to write my autobiography and consider other television projects. My thanks go out to all those who have worked on the shows down the years and the viewers for their loyal support and occasional kind words.'

Indeed, Parky: My Autobiography, was released in the autumn of 2008, as was a CD of his favourite music.

In the years that followed, he continued to work, fronting two seasons of Parkinson: Masterclass, for which he interviewed the likes of Ellie Goulding, Eddie Izzard and Dynamo.

He has also released further books, including 2010's Parky's People and 2016's Muhammad Ali: A Memoir.

‘I will die on stage. I...

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
