Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram  users around the world were left in a 'total blackout' for nearly an hour after the site crashed early on Monday afternoon.

Those who attempted to access the desktop site were met with a message saying 'Sorry, something went wrong,' while mobile users were unable to refresh the News Feed.

'Earlier today, a routine test caused users to have trouble accessing or posting to all Facebook services including WhatsApp and Instagram,' Facebook told the New York Times.

'We quickly investigated and restored access for everyone. We're sorry for the inconvenience,' a Facebook spokesperson said.

As usual, many turned to other social media platforms to share memes and express their gripes about the issues.

The site went down just before 1 p.m. (ET), affecting users from the United States and South America all the way to Europe.

'We're working on it and we'll get it fixed as soon as we can,' Facebook said in an error message to users. Users of the mobile app were unable to refresh the feed

While many users have since been able to get back onto their Facebook pages, some still continue to experience problems with the site and its apps.

'We're working on it and we'll get it fixed as soon as we can,' Facebook said in an error message to users.

Hundreds of reports piled within minutes of the crash, with most (55 percent) saying they were experiencing a 'total blackout,' according to DownDetector.

Others said they are unable to log in (35 percent), while a smaller group (14 percent) is having issues with images.

By 1:15 p.m., more than 1200 reports had already been logged.

Disgruntled Facebook users took to Twitter in droves to complain about the outage.

New York users seemed to be among the hardest hit by the Facebook blackout, along with much of the eastern US.

The issues also popped up across South America, with the Sao Paulo area of Brazil worst affected.

Some users in the UK reported problems with the site today as well, though countries in the Eastern Hemisphere largely appear to have dodged the worst of it.

On Twitter, Facebook users unable to access their site checked in with others to make sure they weren't the only ones having issues, and shared memes about their distress.

Some joked that the issue would push them to finally go outside.

Facebook users had difficulty logging on to the platform in August, when Instagram also also experienced server issues.

A widespread issue hit also hit Facebook inJuly, with Android users in some parts of the world unable to access the social network for up to ten hours.

It was believed to be an issue with an update that caused the problem.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
