«Breaking News» Child actors who starred in You've Got Mail share details about filming

The child actors who starred in in the 1998 rom-com You've Got Mail have shared what it was like to film with Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan two decades ago.

In movie, Joe Fox (Hanks) and Kathleen Kelly (Ryan) meet in an AOL chatroom, and go on to build a deep friendship — and romance — over email.

Jeffrey Scaperrotta, who played Joe Fox's much younger half-brother Matt, is now 25, and Hallee Hirsh, who played his much younger aunt Annabelle, is now 30 — and the two reflected on their time with the grown superstars in a new interview with Today, 20 years after the film's premiere.

The precocious young children have a few scene-stealing moments, and are with Joe Fox when he meets Kathleen Kelly in person for the first time at her bookstore, The Shop Around the Corner.

During that scene, Matt hears the word 'fox' — his last name — and spells it out loud, impressing Kathleen Kelly but making Joe Fox nervous.

'A lot of people, when I tell them that I'm in the movie, that's all they ask me to do,' Jeffrey, who was five at the time of filming, said. 'Even now, 20 years later, they'll give me the good old, "F-O-X." That's what I'm known as. I'm always the Fox kid.'

Despite this being one the Jeffrey's most iconic lines, he admitted to another scene when the kids filmed at a carnival to be the most memorable because of how friendly Tom, 62, was while filming.

'I didn't know I was actually filming just because of how friendly he was with me,' he said. The role was his first time having speaking parts in a movie.

Jeffrey continued: 'Like, I was on his shoulders for basically the whole entire time. Even after shooting, I was, like, still hanging on his shoulders, eating cotton candy, playing with the carnival games.'

Adorably, the young actor asked for Tom's autograph at the time, and keeps it safe at his mom's house to this day.

'Tom Hanks is, like, a people person,' Jeffrey said about working with the two-time Oscar winning actor. 'He is like the type of person who knew everybody on set's name.'

Hallee, who was ten when the movie released, revealed she was a huge fan of Meg Ryan before filming started.

'I was obsessed with Meg Ryan,' she said during the interview. 'I wanted to be Meg Ryan when I grew up. And Tom Hanks was pretty well on my radar as well. So it was definitely, at that point in my life, the biggest win.'

'I was so starstruck by Meg Ryan, an she was just [an] incredibly focused actress and I remember watching her perform a scene and saying the lines each time like she had never said them before in her entire life, and being in so much awe of her,' she added.

Hallee also remembers Hanks being a 'total prankster,' and says he would put fake dog poop on the sidewalk for the kids as a joke.

Unlike Jeffrey, Hallee could recall the day she received news about the new acting role.

'I remember being at home and getting a phone call from my agent, and screaming and running around the house. And I think my mother was probably in tears.'

Her most memorable scene was one that ended up on the cutting room floor once edits were done, since the director's cut of the film was an astonishing three hours in length.

'Can you imagine a three-hour You've Got Mail?' She asked. 'That would be nuts. Anyway, the scene was shot in this incredible Vietnamese restaurant which doesn't exist anymore.

'And I just remember this bowl of pho that we had to eat all day long during that scene. I'm sobbing at Tom Hanks because he put Meg Ryan's store out of business. And I remember having to cry all day long.'

Most fans remember Hallee in the scene in which she sings the song Tomorrow from Annie, belting it out off-key and off-tempo in front of her family.

But the actress revealed that she was actually a better singer than the final cut let on, and had been taking professional classes since she was five.

'That year, I was almost Cosette on Broadway,' she revealed. 'Didn't quite happen for me, but then I got You've Got Mail, which was amazing.

'So I had been training, like, since I was 5 years old, for five years. And all day long during this Christmas scene I had been belting out Tomorrow.

'For my last take, during my close-up, [director] Nora Ephron said, "Just for fun, do this one, like, off-key and out of rhythm. Like, sing it like someone who doesn't know how to sing." I was like, "Oh, my gosh, that'd be so fun." So I did it. And that was the one they used.'

She revealed that people then approached her at the premiere, congratulating her on being a 'good singer' in the scene, despite the actress intentionally butchering the song.

Genius: Hallee was actually a talented singer, but director Nora Ephron told her to sing off-key and off-tempo for the take that made it into the film

Looking back on the movie, Hallee said she felt it represented New York City in the best light because of it being shot during every season of the year.

'For me, You've Got Mail is this beautiful portrait of New York City in all of its seasons,' she said. 'I love that it came out during Christmas because for me it still is this really, like, warm, conforming Christmas hygge kind of film.'

She also noted how specific the movie is to its time.

'You've Got Mail is like this perfect capture of this really unique time in internet and romantic and New York history. People were discovering that you could meet people online, spark a romance, and then in real life be mortal enemies,' she said.

'It was back when Amazon hadn't taken over the big book stores yet,' she added.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
