«Breaking News» BBC film crew step in to save the life of a poisoned lion cub

As a poisoned lion cub lies close to death, a team of vets rush to the spot in a dramatic effort to save it.

This is one of the heart-rending scenes that will grip millions of viewers who tune in to BBC1 tonight for the latest episode of Sir David Attenborough’s new series Dynasties.

But viewers will not be told that it was, in fact, members of the film crew who alerted vets.

The news is set to plunge the series into fresh controversy – last week it was revealed that a crew intervened to help rescue a group of Emperor penguins trapped in an icy gully in Antarctica.

They were accused of breaking the first rule of wildlife documentary-making by interfering with the order of the natural world.

In tonight’s episode, lions in Kenya’s Masai Mara eat bait, unaware that it has been laced with poison. The food was laid down by tribesmen, who fear the big cats will kill their cattle.

After the lions start to show the effects of poisoning, vets are seen arriving at the scene by helicopter and in a Land Rover.

Sir David says in his narration: ‘The crew’s attachment to the lions is what makes what happens next so hard to deal with.’

Cameraman John Aitchison adds: ‘It’s just entirely wrong, isn’t it? Lions are so endangered.’

No mention is made during the programme of the BBC calling in vets for help. But the Mara Mobile Veterinary Unit recorded what happened in an incident report.

It noted that the pride ‘were seen during the morning behaving strangely by a BBC crew filming them. They informed Masai Mara National Reserve Management and Governor’s Camp management, who in turn sought the veterinary unit’s help.’

Speaking to The Mail on Sunday last night, Sir David defended the decision to help the lions.

He said: ‘What you are talking about is whether they intervened in something which involved human beings. It’s not the same as whether you should interfere with the natural processes.’

Director Simon Blakeney added: ‘We didn’t call vets ourselves. The authorities became aware of the situation and it was their decision whether to call the vets or not.’

A BBC spokesman said: ‘The crew were, as far as we know, the first people to find the pride in an unsettled state, with some members feeling unwell.

‘After observing them, they were concerned and called the management of the safari lodge where they were based, who then informed the wildlife authorities. It was the authorities who made a decision to call in the specialist wildlife vets to help the lions.’

But vi...

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
