«Breaking News» 30-year-old Utah rapper fatally shot in the back by police

Family, friends, and fans gathered in front of a Utah police station to protest the fatal shooting of a local rapper, who was found with two bullet holes in his back.

Numerous questions surrounding the death of Cody Belgard, who performed under the name See Smoke, remain unanswered by the Salt Lake City Police Department.

Authorities claim that, on the night of November 9, Belgard, 30, and his girlfriend were confronted by officers in the parking lot of a strip mall.

The officers had been 'notified about' a car in the parking lot that appeared to match a vehicle that fled police the previous week.

Salt Lake City police claim that Belgard was 'uncooperative' during the confrontation.

'He rammed a police car and hit two other vehicles in the parking lot, and attempted to hit officers. He then fled the scene with officers in pursuit,' the police report reads.

Officers later found Belgard in a residential neighborhood and said they again 'contacted the suspect'.

'He was again non-compliant and due to his actions shots were fired,' the report states.

Belgard was found face-down, with two bullet holes in his back. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition, where he died from his injuries.

Nomi Armijo believes that Belgard, who was her brother's best friend, was trying to go to their house just moments before he was shot.

Armijo was outside her home, inside a parked car with her boyfriend and sleeping child, when she saw Belgard coming toward the house.

An officer then slowly approached in a K-9 truck and Belgard turned and went to the backyard, Armijo told the Salt Lake City Tribune

Armijo said the officer then blocked her car, got out, and ordered her to roll down the window.

'We said no because we got scared,' Armijo recalled. 'He was like, "Just roll it down!" He yelled at us. I was looking straight, and my boyfriend told me he had the gun pointing at us. He said, "Stay in the car, don't move.'"

The officer went back to his truck and Armijo saw another cop car drive past and speed around the corner. The sirens weren't on and the lights weren't flashing.

Then, she heard the gunshots.

Belgard's family said police wouldn't let them see the rapper's body for days after he was killed. They also have yet to release any body camera footage

'How do you have an altercation with somebody when their back is turned? It makes no sense,' Sena Belgard, Cody's sister, (pictured) told the crowd at Saturday's protest

'I instantly knew that it was Cody,' Armijo said.

Armijo believes that Belgard had gone through both her and a neighbor's backyard and then ended up on a different street a block away when the officer shot him.

She said he was not armed.

'Police did not come back and get a witness statement from me or nothing,' she added. 'It was weird.'

Armijo said Belgard had appeared to arrive at her house on foot that night, and that she had not see him or his girlfriend in possession of a car previously.

She said he was also not with his girlfriend when he was shot. Belgard's girlfriend had actually called Armijo's family that night after the shooting to ask if they had seen him.

Belgard's family said police wouldn't let them see the rapper's body for days after he was killed. They also have yet to release any body camera footage.

'How do you have an altercation with somebody when their back is turned? It makes no sense,' Sena Belgard, Cody's sister, told the crowd at Saturday's protest.

'Nobody, not even a police officer, has the right to take somebody's life if their own life is not in danger, and I know for a fact that whoever shot my brother, his life was not in danger.'

'He just wasn't violent. He didn't ever want to hurt anything.'

Sena said she has asked investigators if Cody had a weapon, but they have refused to answer.

'He doesn't own any weapons. I don't even know if Cody knew how to use a gun, honestly,' she said.

About 50 people gathered in front of the Rose Park Police Station around 1pm on Saturday, holding 'Justice for Cody' signs in the rain.

Belgard's family and friends were joined by members from Utah Against Police Brutality and the Rose Park Brown Berets, who helped plan the rally.

Authorities said they plan to release video footage from the shooting in the next week. The West Valley City Police Department is also investigating Belgard's death.

Meanwhile, Sena said she wants her brother to be remembered for the soft-spoken and sensitive artist that he was.

'He's a big guy, and a lot of guys would try to be violent with him,' she said.

'He would tell me, "I don't understand. I don't want to fight anybody.'

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
