«Breaking News» Thandie Newton reveals she was BANNED from having a school photo taken because of braids

Actress Thandie Newton has revealed that she was a victim of hair discrimination while at primary school in England.

After it was revealed this week that banning natural hairstyles - including braids and cornrows - would be made illegal in New York, the 46-year-old Line of Duty star revealed that nuns at the school in Penzance, Cornwall had once refused to let her be pictured in a class photograph because she was wearing braids.

Taking to Twitter, the star told her 136,000 followers: 'Take THAT the nuns at my primary school! I wasn’t permitted to have my photo taken on School Photo Day because Mum had given me beautiful rows of braids the night before - specifically to make me look my best. Now hair discrimination is illegal in NYC. Bliss.'

Thandie Newton, a household name in the US, praised the New York City Commission on Human Rights for making the banning of natural hairstyles illegal, calling it 'bliss'

The New York City Commission on Human Rights said this week that banning certain hairstyles would be viewed as racial discrimination with those breaching the guidelines hit with $250,000 fines.

In December, a student in New Jersey was forced to cut his dreadlocks off before a wrestling match. The story made headlines across the US.

Newton may be a household name across the pond, but the star grew up in Penzance, Cornwall.

After being born in England, Newton's family moved to Zambia but returned when the actress was three and settled in England's south-west.

Her father Nick, an artist, is British; her mother Nyasha is a princess of the Shona tribe in Zimbabwe.

Newton told the Daily Mail previously: 'Growing up in Penzance, Cornwall, my brother, Jamie, and I were the only black children in the area.'

She said taunts about the colour of her skin were commonplace, saying: 'There were the usual cruel names: big ears or big nose. And none of the boys wanted to go out with me.

'I don't remember any overt racism, but my mum and I have talked about this and I now know my parents kept us safe from a lot of stuff.'

The tweet prompted others to share their stories including campaigner Natasha Devon, who wrote 'My brother was told to keep his Afro short at school when white boys were allowed then fashionable curtains' (Pictured: Thandie Newton)

The actress' tweet on hair discrimination prompted similar tweets of joy from others. Campaigner Natasha Devon responded: 'Yesssssssss. (My brother was told to keep his Afro short at school when white boys were allowed then fashionable curtains. I was raging).'

@OllyMead1 added: 'I'll bet those braids look just lovely when you're standing next to your BAFTA, Emmy, Golden Globe and SAG awards. I'm glad you went on to achieve great things despite some other people's efforts.'

@Lois_Ouellette shared: 'I'm 72. When I was young, my friends & I were refused service at restaurants because the men had long hair. Why are we STILL battling hair choices??!! I am beyond sorry that happened to you & is still happening to people in 2019.'

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
