«Breaking News» Richard Bacon suffers from PTSD as he RETURNS to intensive care unit where he nearly died

Richard Bacon has revealed he suffered from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) as he returned to the intensive care unit where he had nearly died.

The presenting star, 42, fell seriously ill with a mystery lung infection in July and was put into a medically-induced coma, with doctors telling Bacon and his family they 'expected him to die'.

According to The Sun, he returned to Lewisham hospital to film for a documentary but forced himself to leave after feeling 'claustrophobic' and 'overwhelmed'.

Richard famously spent 12 days in intensive care and nine in a medically-induced coma in July after a virus 'exploded' in his lungs during a flight from the United States.

He was initially incorrectly diagnosed with serious pneumonia across both lungs, but after Bacon failed to respond to treatment doctors were forced to take emergency action and place him in a coma.

Richard survived the ordeal but was reminded of the near-death experience as he returned to Lewisham hospital in South East London to film for ITV documentary Brexit, Immigration: Who Do We Let In?.

He had been interviewing staff, but faced with being in the same ward and seeing the same equipment used on him, suffered from PTSD.

Richard explained: 'When the cameras were turned off I was standing on the ward looking at the equipment I was hooked up to, with wires coming out of everywhere. I felt PTSD on the ward that day, for sure.'

He revealed how memories of his time in hospital came 'flooding back' to him, including 'frightening moments' such as waking up from the coma and hallucinating.

Bacon claimed: 'I started to feel overwhelmed, claustrophobic and have a little bit of PTSD and I said, "I have to stand outside."'

The experience hasn't put Richard off returning for another visit in the future, as he has vowed to do some fundraising for the hospital - undoubtedly to show the staff his gratitude for saving his life.

Meanwhile, Richard has revealed how doctors expected him to die from a lung infection and recalled the moment his wife told him to 'stay away from the white light' in an interview with Good Morning Britain.

He spoke to GMB about how close he came to death, describing the moment he was put under as the 'most shocking day of my life'. Bacon told co-hosts Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid: 'I felt very bad for [my wife] Rebecca. For me, I found out afterwards how close I'd come [to death].

'As they were putting me in the coma she rubbed my feet and said, "don't walk towards the white light", which I think was a joke, but I'm not entirely sure.

'There was one point where they had the crash equipment hovering over me, my body turned blue, there was a moment when they believed I was going to die.'

Father-of-two Richard has since made a miraculous recovery but still has a few months left to fully recover due to the 'amount of drugs pumped' into his body.

Speaking to The Times Magazine of his ordeal, he said: 'In 2018, I can go into a hospital, aged 42, be that fit, and have all that modern equipment around me and still nearly die? F*****g hell. I came that close. The first two nights, it was incredibly close.'

And the star called waking up from a medically induced coma 'the worst day of my life' and said he was thrashing about 'like a wild animal'.

He said: 'I remember thinking: I've not got enough oxygen, the room's too hot and I'm not getting enough attention. I need help. I remember consciously pulling the pipes out of my neck to set the alarms off. And it worked – people came running in.'

Reflecting on his illness, Richard explained that he's grateful to have survived the mystery infection and has vowed to give up alcohol and marijuana, which is legal in LA where he lives and works.

On his exit from hospital, Richard credited the NHS for saving his life, he penned on Instagram alongside a shot of his hospital bed: 'I don’t know whether I see this as the bed I nearly died in or the bed that saved my life'

He said: 'I'm giving up drinking. I had been drinking four or five glasses of wine every night. In LA, I've been smoking weed. It's all legal over there. I'm going to stop all that.'

He recently explained that he was treating the near-death experience as a wake-up call. In an interview on BBC Radio 5 Live, Richard said: 'I've decided to really, really embrace health from here on in.

'I've always drunk too much, I've always drunk too quickly, so I'm giving up drinking altogether forever as a result of what happened to me.

Adding: 'Because if I don't effect some sort of really, really positive change out of this, then it's a giant waste of everyone's time... So I'm using it to effect positive change.

'It's something I've been thinking about anyway. I want to do something different, I want to look back in 10, 20 years and think, "this was the moment I changed my life."'

On his exit from hospital, Richard credited the NHS for saving his life, he penned on Instagram alongside a shot of his hospital bed: 'Cleared for take off. Gone within the hour (I’ll be leaving two weeks almost to the minute after I arrived).

'I don’t know whether I see this as the bed I nearly died in or the bed that saved my life. Either way. I won’t miss it. But I will miss the 50 staff of Lewisham Hospital who definitely saved my life. Every. Single. One. Of. Them.'

Richard has been married to wife Rebecca since 2008 - they share two children; son Arthur, seven, and daughter Ivy, four.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
