«Breaking News» Massachusetts-based child safety WATCH group unveils list of 'worst toys' for 2018 holidays season

A Black Panther 'slash claw' and a plastic Power Rangers sword are among the items topping a consumer safety group's annual list of worst toys for the holiday season.

Massachusetts-based World Against Toys Causing Harm, or W.A.T.C.H., unveiled its 46th annual list of the 10 'worst toys' Tuesday at Franciscan Children's Hospital in Boston.

Joan Siff, the nonprofit organization's president, said many of the toys on the list represent choking, eye and other safety hazards that surface year after year, despite the group's efforts.

But the Toy Association, an industry trade group that represents most of the toy companies named this year, complained the list is biased, inaccurate and 'needlessly frightening' to parents.

Siff advised parents to shop 'defensively' and not be lulled into a false sense of security because a toy is made by a familiar brand or sold at an established retailer.

One child is treated in a US emergency room every three minutes for a toy-related injury, according to the Center for Injury and Research at Nationwide Children's Hospital.

Still, the association said many of the hazards highlighted by W.A.T.C.H. are clearly spelled out in the products' packaging and instructions.

It also said only two products listed on the nonprofit's 'worst toy' lists from the five years prior were recalled, and those two had already been pulled before W.A.T.C.H. released its list.

James Swartz, a trial lawyer who serves as W.A.T.C.H.'s director, responded by pointing to a list of dozens of toys that have been recalled or pulled from retailers' shelves from the early 2000s all the way back to the 1970s, in part by the group's efforts.

And he said providing detailed warning labels 'doesn't absolve' toy makers from needing to simply design safer items.

'They're trying to shift the responsibility to parents and consumers,' Swartz said. 'They're really shirking their responsibility.'

One example of a product included the W.A.T.C.H. that has an elaborate, and alarming, warning is the Nickelodeon Nella Princess Knight Pillow Pets Sleeptime Lite, of which the group warned:

'These soft, plush "Pillow Pets Sleeptime Lites" project colorful night-sky images to make "night-time fun." Marketed for infants as a nightlight for baby’s room, remarkably the package cautions that the product is "not intended" for use in a crib.

'Nella is adorned with small, felt-like flower and heart-tag accessories which, if removed, present potential ingestion hazards. Additionally, the manufacturer identifies a "battery acid leakage" hazard.'

Swartz also highlighted Hasbro's retractable plastic claws for Marvel's Black Panther, an item featured on this year's list. The toy gloves come with a warning they should not be used to hit or swing at people.

'When you call it a slash claw, there's likely one thing a child is going to do with that claw,' he said.

As for the Power Rangers Super Ninja Steel Supertstar Blade, the group said:

'W.A.T.C.H. OUT! Young children are encouraged to "power up" with this "Super Ninja Steel" spring-loaded plastic blade, with the potential to cause facial and other impact injuries.'

A Cabbage Patch Kids ballerina doll that made this year's list is marketed to children ages two and above, but includes a removable tutu and headband that can be a choking hazard, Swartz said.

Other toys on the list included a Nerf gun that fires soft discs, presenting 'the potential for eye and facial injuries,' a 'stomp rocket' that launches foam-tipped projectiles up to 200 feet in the air and a plastic 'cutting fruit' set.

'The soft, plush kitten, however, can detach, posing the potential for choking if ingested.'

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
