«Breaking News» Luther series five trailer: Idris Elba returns as the grizzled detective

Idris Elba is set to return for a fifth series of iconic BBC crime drama Luther, and the first trailer suggests the detective will face his greatest adversary yet.

The actor slips back into his big coat just in time for Christmas as he attempts to solve a complex, interwoven series of murders that brings him closer than ever to the true face of evil.

And the first official trailer from the new series suggests DCI John Luther's latest adversary is a chameleon whose seemingly random and indiscriminate killings make him almost impossible to track down.

Fortunately Luther has reinforcements in the form of new partner D.S. Catherine Halliday, played by Wunmi Mosaku, and the pair embark on a deadly game of cat and mouse with their foe.

But while mayhem ensues, a reticent Luther is still haunted by his troubled past and is forced to confront the demons of his own recent past - not least an infatuation with serial killer Alice Morgan.

The brilliant psychopath, played by Ruth Wilson, helped avenge the death of Luther's wife Zoe before seemingly dying in mysterious and unexplained circumstances.

However a fleeting moment suggests her disappearance will soon be explained, with the new trailer ending on a fleeting image of her bloody, murderous face.

Wilson's return as the popular character comes as she plays her own grandmother in Mrs Wilson, also on BBC One.

The series, which returns after three-year absence, also welcomes Cold Feet actress Hermione Norris, who joins the cast as psychiatrist Dr. Vivien Lake.

Returning for four new episodes, Elba's portrayal of the rough and ready, emotionally impulsive cop who breaks all the rules to get his man, has seen him scoop a Golden Globe and SAG award.

After battling a cannibal serial killer in the last series - which aired in December 2015 - Luther was last seen walking through his London stomping ground and into an uncertain future in the multi-award winning series.

Many questions were left unanswered including what really happened to Alice Morgan - although the new trailer suggests this may well be explained.

With John having to deal with the murder of his ex-wife Zoe and partner DS Justin Ripley along with the apparent loss of Alice it is unclear what fresh emotional torment the obsessive DCI will have to endure next.

Writer of the beloved crime drama Neil Cross revealed that Luther's unfinished business sealed the deal for him to bring the compulsive cop back.

In statement, he said: 'Now what? It’s a question Idris and I get asked a lot. What happened to John Luther after we last saw him striding unbowed through the streets of his city, his blood red London? It can’t be over, can it? There’s so much we don’t know. So much unfinished business.

'The thing is, we’ve been asking ourselves the same question. Because we love John and wonder what he’s up to. And as for me, I’m scared of the monsters.

'The face at the window. The hand under the bed. The shadow at the end of the street. Who’s going to stop them, if not John Luther?'

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
