«Breaking News» Best state schools are closing the gap on their private rivals

Some of the best state schools in the country are bridging the grades gap between themselves and their independent rivals, new ranking reveal.

Following the introduction of last summer's more taxing GCSE exams, state schools have proved they are able to compete with students from private institutions.

According to new Parent Power rankings published in the Sunday Times today the amount of state schools with children achieving A* equivalent has doubled, despite initial fears the more difficult exams would widen the results gap between state and private schools.

Student's exams are now graded 1-9, with nine being the top end of the scale with the brightest students achieving these grades.

Previously there were 16 state schools where half of all of grades awarded to students were A*, but since the exams were altered that has now more than doubled to 38.

All of the state schools that achieved these outstanding grades were grammar schools, now accounting for almost a third of the 128 school's in the country where the students are being awarded top grades.

Top of the independent tables was St Paul's Girls School in west London while leading the state tables was Queen Elizabeth's School in north London.

Professor Alan Smithers, from the University of Buckingham, said: 'There are signs that at last state schools are beginning to make inroads into what looked to be an impregnable lead held by independent schools.'

These rankings are the first indication that state schools are closing in on private schools since the introduction of the new GCSEs, which will sat by the masses for the first time last summer.

However it is not just grammar schools who have shown a significant improvement, ten leading comprehensive schools also increased their proportion of level 8 and 9 grades.

Before the change of exam style these schools, including St George's School, in Harpenden, Hertfordshire, had around a quarter of top grades but that figure has now increased to more than a third.

Headmistress of St George's, Helen Barton, said that while the schools had 'risen to the challenge' of the new style exams, they haven't had an entirely positive response.

She added that although the highest achieving students had exceeded expectation, some students had had increased anxiety due to the increase in difficulty.

Public school to reduce fees because the middle class have been 'priced out' of private education

A private school sets to reduce its fees in a bid to make independent schooling more affordable for the middle class.

Rising fears that they are being 'priced out' of sending their children to independent schools has led Millfield School to reduce its fees, reports the Sunday Times.

The boarding school, which currently charges parents £38,000 for the privilege of sending their children to the elite institution, intends to reduce the price by ten per cent.

Headmaster Gavin Horgan has urged schools that it is the 'right thing to do', following claims that independent schools are only affordable to the wealthiest families.

Mr Horgan said that he intends to cut fees because he believes that they have increased too rapidly for people to afford.

He gave the example that families must have at least two doctors in the family in order to be able afford it, whereas previously they would have only needed one.

The school intends to make itself more affordable to the masses, without taking into account their background.

Part of this initiative will involve trebling the free places for children from less affluent families.

The school spends £7.5 million on bursary's for its pupils and 15 out of 1,240 students pay either a little towards their fees or nothing at all.

However due to the fact that some schools are maxed out on budget already they would find it near impossible to cut fees for their students.

The decision to cut fees comes after public schools were told to do more to educate children who are unable to pay.

Over the last decade private school fees have increased by more than 50 per cent, according to figures by Independent Schools Council.

Headmaster of King's College school in Wimbledon, Andrew Halls, has also previously called for school fees to be cut.

He said that the school, which costs £21,600 a year to attend, blames an 'endless queue' of rich families from outside the country who want to send their children to top British schools.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
