«Breaking News» Bargain Hunt star blasts Twitter troll who mocked her Down’s Syndrome sister

A TV antiques expert, has been praised on Twitter after hitting back at a troll who commented 'you got the looks then' on a picture of her and her Down's Syndrome sister.

Christina Trevanion, 37,  had tweeted a picture showing her sister Nicola polishing silver antiques at the family's auction house in Shropshire.

But it prompted one  'small minded' Twitter user called Jack Jones to respond: 'You got the looks then.'

Christina, who's appeared on BBC shows including Bargain Hunt, Antiques Road Trip and Flog It!, tweeted back: 'Wow. Initially I felt incredibly angry at your response to me posting a picture of me & my sister who happens to have Down's Syndrome.

'But now, I just feel incredibly sad that you judge your world on looks. What a narrow minded, shallow & ignorant person u are. Enjoy being blocked.'

Mencap described the troll's comments as 'cowardly'.

Speaking today, Christina said she'd wanted to speak out in order to highlight how people with Down's Syndrome are viewed in society.

'My driving force behind this is to show that people with Down's Syndrome have an active role to play.

'Too often they are hidden away - in homes and other places - and the more opportunities they are given the more they'll be accepted in society.

'I've had previous comments and never spoken back before but on this occasion I felt I had to speak out for my sister.'

Christina, who's a partner at the family's Trevanion and Dean auction house, in Whitchurch, when she's not filming, said he was 'very protective' of her sister.

She said Nicola worked part-time at the business and has been helping the team prepare for it's next auction this Saturday.

'Nicola lives with my mother, so it gives her a little respite when she helps out here,' said Christina.

'She loves coming in and she really enjoys being part of the team - it gives her a real sense of purpose.'

Mike Blythe posted: 'How sad can some folk get, I thought it was a lovely photo of you both.'

David Hopkins added: 'Rise above the bottom feeders of the world @CTrevanion. I loved the picture as I'm sure any reasonable person will.'

Christina later tweeted: 'Thanks for all your support twitter folk.... sadly this is the kind of ignorant attitude that we as a family face every day. More understanding & tolerance will, & does help & we greatly appreciate each and every one of your lovely comments. Love y'all.'

Ciara Lawrence, campaigns support officer for Mencap, said: 'This is so awful, and the people behind these nasty comments don't see the hurt and upset that they cause from behind their screens. What's more, this case just shows the lack of understanding around Down's Syndrome and learning disability, which makes it even worse!

'I have a learning disability and have experienced online bullying myself. It made me feel scared, and I could quite easily have left that social media site because of it, which would have taken away my voice and something I enjoy.

'It's so sad that this is still happening, and I believe the big social media sites, such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, need to take action and crack down on these bullies. Making the blocking and reporting guidelines easier to understand and more accessible for all would be a start, but I think social media sites need to go further than this and actually put in place a 'three strikes' warning system, where someone can be removed from the site if they continue to be abusive.

'This is a cowardly act!'

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
