Theresa May is facing Cabinet calls to 'rebrand' her Chequers plan over fears that Tory activists have been won over by condemnation from Eurosceptics.

The PM has been warned there is a 'lot of work to do' to convince the party's rank-and-file that the blueprint is good for the country.

A Cabinet Brexiteer told MailOnline that even though the proposals were 'pragmatic' the government's message was at risk of being drowned out by furious attacks from Boris Johnson and others.

The stark warning came as Mrs May struggles to keep her Chequers plan alive despite coming under heavy fire from her own MPs, Labour and the EU.

The conference in Birmingham has been dominated by the mounting civil war between Tory factions - with Chancellor Philip Hammond openly lambasting Mr Johnson's rival ideas for future ties with the EU as a 'fantasy'.

The former foreign secretary is due to launch another salvo against the premier at a rally on the fringe of the conference later.

Mrs May - who says her Chequers plan is the only way to keep smooth trade and avoid a hard Irish border - is facing a crucial test of her support when she delivers her keynote speech to the party faithful tomorrow.

However, despite signs of leadership jostling, allies are increasingly confident the party will give her more time to try and thrash out a deal with the EU.

They have been encouraged by applause for criticism of Mr Johnson in the conference hall. Senior figures have been touring Conservative associations around the country trying to sway opinion among largely Eurosceptic members.

One minister close to the PM said they believed the charm offensive was slowly working.

But another Cabinet minister warned that, although there was a genuine problem with the Irish border and critics of the Chequers proposals had not come up with an adequate solution, the leadership was at risk of losing the argument.

‘A lot of the Brexiteers are saying there is no problem. But businesses in Northern Ireland are spitting blood. They believe that no-deal would be a serious problem,' they said.

‘The PM is taking a pragmatic approach. Her proposal would solve the border and allow us to do trade deals elsewhere, but we have a lot of work to do to explain it to members.’

The minister said no-deal plans were going 'really well.' and technology would be effective if it was needed.

But they said there would undoubtedly be 'disruption' in the short term if the UK crashed out and the country would be 'left with nothing' in terms of trade deals.

‘If WTO is so good, why do we want trade deals with other countries? If we go out without any deal we have literally nothing in March. It would be a big adjustment. Businesses will adjust quickly, but there would be disruption,' they said.

On the issue of how to win over activists to the Chequers blueprint - which would see the UK effectively stay in the single market for goods and collect some taxes on behalf of the EU - the minister said: ‘We should call it something else. There is nothing wrong with it, but it urgently needs rebranding.

‘I would rather refer to it as “The PM’s proposal”.'

The PM has been warned...

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
