«Breaking News» How washing your hair daily can destroy it

Freshly-washed hair is a daily must-have for some people - however a top celebrity stylist has issued a warning about the long-term damage that can be caused by shampooing your tresses every day.

Dove celebrity hairstylist Mark Townsend, who has worked with a host of celebrities, including Fifty Shades Dakota Johnson and designer duo Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, explained to DailyMail.com that while clean-as-a-whistle hair might feel great on the surface, it is actually doing a lot more harm than good in the long term.

'Washing your hair too frequently can actually strip your hair and make you overproduce oil on your scalp because you’re drying it out,' Mark said.

'Skipping a day or two in between washing actually prevents that overproduction.

'If you’re washing more and more, you’re actually causing more damage because you’re going to be blow drying it way more often which causes damage to the length and ends of the hair.'

The hairstylist, who is working with Dove to promote the brand's new collaboration with Dunkin - which celebrates women who are 'running on coffee and dry shampoo' - added that not all oil makes your hair look greasy, explaining that the natural oils produced by your scalp are helping to keep your locks nourished and healthy.

'Think of this as mother nature’s deep conditioner!' he added.

And just like a deep conditioner, or indeed any hair product, Mark says there are ways the ensure you get the best out of your natural oils, too.

'Before bed, give your hair a nice brush starting at the scalp to move those oils down because it won’t happen on its own naturally,' he advised.

When it comes to washing your hair, while Mark warns against doing it every day, he says there isn't an exact formula that works for everyone in terms of frequency - although a good rule of thumb is to opt for washes on every other day of the week.

'It will depend on the level of damage you have and your hair type,' he noted. 'Most of my clients are between two to three times a week.'

In between washes, Mark says that dry shampoo is the easiest way to help your hair look and feel fresh - provided you are using it in the correct way, which he says not everyone knows how to do.

'Always make sure to hold the can 8-12 inches away from your roots before spraying -I cringe when I see my clients try to spray any aerosol product too close to their hair!

'Because this is a wet product in the can, the powders and the starches in need that millisecond to dry before it hits the hair.

'I like [spraying the dry shampoo] section by section on 2-3” sections of hair to make sure I really coat the hair. Also, don’t forget the nape of your neck where oils can get trapped – flip your head and really get in there!

'Once you’ve sprayed your hair, gently massage it into your scalp like you are washing your hair. For that day two or day three hair, consider leaving it on a little longer – brush your teeth with it in or just wait a minute or two – and then give it a good massage.

'In doing this, you’re breaking up the oils and really giving the product time to actively absorb it.

'Lastly, brush out your hair. It’s always a good idea to brush through after you apply dry shampoo because it allows the powders and starches to get to the [mid section of the hair] and all the way down to the ends.

'I like using a mixed bristle brush for this because it has the added bonus of stimulating your scalp and really getting into those roots.'

When it comes to the perfect product, it's really up to personal preference, although Mark says his all-time favorite dry shampoo pick is the Dove Refresh+Care Volume & Fullness Dry Shampoo.

'I’ve become a connoisseur of dry shampoo and I’ve tried every single one on the market,' he noted. 'The Dove Dry Shampoo is my go-to – it’s doesn’t leave behind any visible residue and cleanses to instantly absorb oils.'

But dry shampoo isn't just an essential for fixing greasy hair, Mark explained, adding that it can - and should - be seen as a must-have styling product as well.

'Dry shampoo is a huge styling product for me!' he said, while noting that the DovexDunkin collaboration - which includes a pop-up styling cafe in New York City on October 1 - makes perfect sense, because coffee and dry shampoo go hand-in-hand as morning essentials for so many people.

'The Dove Refresh+Care Volume & Fullness Dry Shampoo is my favorite volumizer. When I’m doing photoshoots, I typically have to style my clients three to four times in one day and I use it to revive the hair in between, but also to revive the texture.

'It’s all about that slight lift at the crown – setting with hairspray makes hair stick together, whereas the dry shampoo separates it, giving you much fuller looking and voluminous hair.'

And that's not all dry shampoo is handy for: 'Spray bobby pins with dry shampoo because the powders and starches create friction, allowing them to stay in the hair without falling out,' Mark revealed.

As far as his other must-have essentials are concerned, the hairstylist admitted that he is never without Blax's hair elastics, because they 'provide such a strong hold, especially for ponytails', while his favorite brush pick is the Spornette Porcupine XL, which he has been using for 25 years.

Product-wise, Mark says it's all about the Dove Style+Care Smooth & Shine Heat Protection Spray.

'Hot tools have changed drastically over the past few years and it’s great the we have a variety of options, but sometimes they are too hot for consumers to even use without causing damage,' Mark said of his choice.

'This spray acts as a heat conductors to even spread out the heat and protect the hair from damage.'

Style-wise, Mark says he has a few go-to's that he believes will be in style for many years to come: a top knot and a ponytail.

'A top knot is sticking around forever!' he insisted. 'It’s such a fun hairstyle and I love that it’s a trend that’s really stuck around and adapted - the half up top knot is one of my faves.

'I even love seeing the girls who have two or three buns, but then keep the length down - it’s such a cute hairstyle when you’re on-the-go (or if you overslept!) because you can disguise the hair that might have gotten messed up while sleeping.

'Think about it – when you’re sleeping, the hair at the top of your head actually gets the most messy, so you can just easily sweep it up into a half up bun leaving you with the under part of your hair down and looking fabulous.

'[And] a good ol’ fashioned ponytail is always amazing. You can give it a messy texture, but always make sure that it’s properly secured in place with a new elastic so it doesn’t slide... no one likes a saggy ponytail!

'If your hair is thick consider using two hairties to make sure it stays in place all day long. I also love wrapping a piece of ribbon or fabric around the base of the ponytail… it takes five seconds to do but it looks red carpet ready!'

For those ladies with curly hair, Mark suggests opting for a braid.

'If the pieces in the front are no longer as curly and you don’t have time to wash, you can easily put those front pieces into a small braid and pin it back behind your ear,' he explained.

'Use two bobbypins to keep the braid in place – as a bonus tip, spray the pins with dry shampoo to add some grip to them and place them in an X for double the hold.'

And if you create any of these styles using dry shampoo, Mark says they can actually end up earning you a year's supply of coffee or dry shampoo - just by sharing images of them online as part of a DovexDunkin sweepstakes.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
