In a new episode of the series Autopsy: The Last Hours Of... top US pathologist Dr Michael Hunter says the singer almost certainly died from smoking and her family's genetic history.
Dr Hunter also believes that her lung cancer may have spread after unearthing photos of her wearing a neck brace, just seven months before her death aged 63.
Summer admitted later she had been deeply affected by the devastation of 9/11.
She battled depression during her life and attempted suicide in 1976.
She was deeply traumatised by 9/11 and followed the atrocity she sunk into a bout of depression that lasted two years, she revealed before her death.
Summer’s paranoia intensified in the months after 9/11, say friends.
Deney Terrio, a friend and the disco choreographer who taught John Travolta to dance, recalled how she would hang silk sheets in her dressing room to prevent any dust from coming in.
Another told the showbusiness website TMZ the singer would continually spray disinfectant in the air.
Dr Hunter said the singer had become obsessed that she too had become a victim of 9/11.
He said: 'She was staying in a hotel just a few blocks from the World Trade Centre in 2011 and there is no doubt that this was a terrifying experience. She told friends and family she believed she inhaled smoke and ash from the cloud. There is no doubt that there was asbestos, crushed cement, lead, copper, fibreglass and other dangerous substances in that cloud and after her exposure she became unsettled about air quality and germs, often wiping every surface with disinfectant.'
Dr Hunter added: ' I do not believe she could have been exposed to it long enough to suffer any long-term damage, as has been the case with firefighters and other first responders'.

Memorial: A tribute to Donna Summer in Los Angeles
The Dr blames an accumulation of factors for the singer's death, including her smoking during her early career, and after she kicked the habit - smoke filled clubs, The Sunday Express reported.
Dr Hunter also revealed the death certificates of the singer's mother and younger sister showed they also died of lung cancer.
He said there was a 'genetic predisposition to this form of cancer.
Around 3,000 people as a result of 9/11 and it is believed that around 1,000 people exposed to the dust have died — with 350 dying after contracting cancer.
The documentary, which airs in the US today and in the UK later in the year, also reveals that Summer suffered deep deep depression in the 70s and was prescribed a cocktail of drugs to help her cope with her anxiety.
Summer rose to fame in 1976 with the disco hit Love to Love You Baby. She had three number one hits in 1979 with Hot Stuff, Bad Girls and No More Tears (Enough Is Enough), a duet with Barbara Streisand.
Tributes poured in following the singer's death including from the then US President Barack Obama who revealed he was a fan of tracks such as Love To Love You Baby, Hot Stuff and Bad Girls.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.
Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
