«Breaking News» Ban gambling adverts from football shirts says Church of England

Church of England leaders want the gambling logos of football club sponsors to be banned from players’ shirts.

They are also demanding an end to the use of illuminated advertising hoardings around football pitches.

Their intervention comes as concerns grow over high-profile sports ads by bookmakers and their influence on children.

Despite a promise by the gambling industry to voluntarily withdraw betting ads this year during the ‘whistle-to-whistle’ period – from five minutes before kick off to five minutes after the end of the match – more than half of TV advertising linked to matches comes in the build-up to games and the post-match analysis.

The Church of England’s demands will come at a meeting this month of its parliament, the General Synod, which is expected to call for a cut in advertising and a levy on bookies to pay for education and addiction treatment programmes.

The pressure follows a Church campaign against high-stakes, fixed-odds betting terminals in betting shops that contributed to curbs brought in by Theresa May on the machines, nicknamed the ‘crack cocaine’ of gambling. From April, the maximum stake punters can make will be slashed from £100 to £2 a time.

The Bishop of St Albans, the Right Reverend Dr Alan Smith, said his attention was drawn to the dangers of gambling advertising after hearing of a boy who rejected the football shirt his parents gave him for Christmas because it lacked the logo of the bookies that sponsored his team and so was ‘not a proper one’.

Dr Smith said: ‘That was a real wake-up call for me. A whole generation of young people have taken on a range of views and attitudes about the norm of gambling.

‘We have changed the enjoyment of sport from sport in itself to something that’s to do with money and betting.’

The bishop called for radical change, adding: ‘We want to see a significant decline in the number of gambling adverts children will see.’

Dr Smith said research showed that over a two-year period, 55,000 teenagers were classified as problem gamblers, adding: ‘We need research data, we need proper treatment. The gambling industry should contribute towards that.’

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
