«Breaking News» World War II heroine who stopped train bomb had £95,000 stolen by family

A Second World War heroine who stopped the bombing of an allied train died penniless after her daughter and son-in-law stole her life savings of more than £100,000.

Mary Garvey, who lived in sheltered accommodation in Benton, Newcastle, suffered from dementia and was taken advantage of by Ian Downs, 66, and his wife Margaret.

The couple are due to be sentenced at Newcastle Crown Court today.

The 94-year-old's family said her heroism during the battle against the Nazis deserved a 'life of luxury' but in reality she died penniless while suffering from dementia.

Downs, of East Boldon, South Tyneside, admitted two counts of theft at Newcastrle Crown Court and will be sentenced today.

He pleaded guilty to taking £95,000 from Mrs Garvey and then claiming another £20,000 from her life insurance after she died in May 2013.

She had served in the British Army Catering Corps during the Second World War and met her soldier husband Anthony.

During her time in the military, she travelled across Europe and was credited with preventing the explosion of a bomb on an allied train.

Mrs Garvey was widowed when Anthony died aged just 59 in 1977 before she became reliant on her family for support as she suffered from dementia.

Downs took control of Mrs Garvey's finances but secretly made a number of small payments into his accounts over the span of eight years.

The deceit came to light months after Mrs Garvey passed away and Downs' sister-in-law, Gwenda, and the granddaughter Angela asked about inheritance.

Downs told them he would look into it but months went by and he was confronted over the accounts.

When he failed to present the documents, relatives contacted Northumbria Police and their fraud was uncovered.

Mrs Garvey's granddaughter, Angela, said her war-hero grandmother 'deserved a life of luxury', but she was instead left without a penny to her name.

She said: 'This case was never about the money to us.

'It was about the fact a woman who had dedicated her life to her country was left to die in poverty.

'My grandmother deserved a life of luxury after everything she did and should have had anything she wanted but instead a person she trusted ended up stealing all her money.

'She was vulnerable, lonely and suffering from dementia but my uncle took advantage of that for his own financial gain.

'He has torn our family apart and I will never be able to forgive him for the way he treated my grandmother. I am glad that he will now be held accountable for his actions.'

Detective Constable Frank Cox described the case as an 'appalling breach of trust' and said Downs deserved to be put before the courts.

He said: 'Mary Garvey was a frail and vulnerable woman whose life was very much in the hands of Ian Downs.

'The defendant has taken advantage of his position of trust for the best part of a decade during which time he lived off the money he stole from Mary.'

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
