«Breaking News» UK strikes deal with WTO to stay in market for...

Britain has struck its first deal through the World Trade Organisation for a post-Brexit world.

Under a new deal struck today Britain is still part of the market for lucrative government contracts with dozens of trading partners.

It paves the way for Britain to retain its place among 47 WTO countries that are involved in the Government Procurement Agreement, including the European Union's 27 remaining members.

The arrangement ensures continuity of cross-border bidding for significant government contracts, though military contracts are generally excluded.

A Geneva-based trade official said the agreement was a relatively straightforward step but also important for ensuring access to a combined market valued at over 1.7 trillion US dollars.

Britain still faces unresolved issues when it comes to access for its goods and services markets after its withdrawal from the EU scheduled for March 29.

The announcement comes two days after Trade Secretary Liam Fox sought to downplay concerns over cheap imports post-Brexit as he revealed Britain will maintain 43 EU measures designed to protect industry from unfair trading.

The International Trade Secretary said a wide range of goods will be covered by the trade remedies, including ironing boards and aluminium foil, to assist industries such as steel and ceramics.

He added that 66 of the 109 measures will not be maintained, noting food and construction will be areas to see lower prices for UK consumers.

This will include the removal of a 34% tariff on imports of solar glass from China, which is used to produce solar panels, and a 10% reduction on imported sweetcorn from Thailand, Dr Fox told MPs.

Shadow international trade secretary Barry Gardiner warned that Dr Fox was pursuing an approach which will open UK markets to cheaper imports and increase the volume of imports at 'less than fair market cost'.

Labour frontbencher Mr Gardiner said: 'We're just five weeks away from leaving the EU and possibly operating our own trade remedies and yet the Trade Bill, which establishes the Trade Remedies Authority, is still stuck in the Lords due to the Government's refusal to set out a transparent and democratic approach to trade agreements.'

Mr Gardiner claimed Dr Fox had 'fast-tracked the UK into the sort of less regulated economy he has always favoured', adding: 'Rather than presuming to maintain trade remedies and maintain the status quo, so eager is the Secretary of State to begin cutting tariffs, opening up UK markets to cheaper imports, the Government has decided to presume all such measures will be terminated unless a case is made to maintain them.

'Such measures will undoubtedly increase the volume of imports on UK markets at less than fair market cost.'

Dr Fox replied: 'Yes of course I want a less regulated economy, but it's against the rules of the WTO (World Trade Organisation) to actually impose regulations and trade remedies where there is no UK production or we don't meet the threshold.

'When it comes to cheaper prices, he talks as though cheaper prices are somehow a bad thing - I would love to see the disposable income of people across all income ranges in this country improve, and if we can do that by removing tariffs - which are effectively taxes - via procedures such as this then we should be willing to do so.'

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
