Whilst gory autopsy photos were being shown in Manhattan Supreme Court, a juror in the murder trial of backgammon pro Rod Covlin on Wednesday passed out and had to be tended to by the medical examiner witness and by a fellow juror who is a nurse.

Former New York City senior medical examiner Dr. Jonathan Hayes had been explaining the injuries on financier Shele Danishefksy’s neck using a series of autopsy photos – including one in which the skin was peeled back from her neck to show the injuries underneath – when Juror No. 8 slumped in his chair and a fellow juror shouted, “He needs medical attention.”

Juror No. 1, the nurse, climbed into the second row to aid her fellow panelist and Judge Ruth Pickholz suggested that perhaps Dr. Hayes should take a look at the stricken juror.

It was unclear what the source of Juror No. 8’s physical distress was, but the photos that had been on the screen moments before were particularly gruesome, given that the autopsy occurred two months after she was buried and eventually exhumed.

Among the photos were the interior musculature of Shele’s neck, showing bruising and hemorrhaging, as well as the Shele’s neck after exhumation.

Earlier, a photo of Shele’s eye from an examination the day after she died was shown, depicting burst blood vessels in her eye.

A photo of Shele’s fractured hyoid bone was on the screen when Juror No. 8 took ill.

Burst blood vessels in the eye, called petechiae, and a fracture to the hyoid bone – a U-shaped bone that supports the tongue – are hallmarks of strangulation.

Covlin is charged with strangling his wife in her Upper West Side apartment on Dec. 31, 2009 and staging the scene to make it look like she had slipped in the tub and drowned in a freak accident.

Her Orthodox Jewish family initially waived an autopsy on Dec. 31, but Hayes said as soon as he saw her body in the morgue the next day, “I turned to my colleague and said, ‘She needs an autopsy.”

He said he spoke to Shele’s father, who relented and agreed to a post mortem. He said he made an external examination and took photographs, but “just as I was about to make my first incision” he got a call saying Shele’s father had changed his mind and didn’t want an autopsy.

Hayes testified he spoke three times with the Chief Medical Examiner, Dr. Charles Hirsch, and asked that Hirsch overrule the family’s religious objection to an autopsy, telling his boss, “I think she might have been killed.”

He said during the third call Hirsch responded that there wasn’t enough to override the family’s wishes.”

“He became angry and at that point, I caved,” Hayes said, adding later, “He had the power and I didn’t. I was really surprised … I put my tools away and released the body.”

Two moths later, after suspicions mounted against Covlin, who was involved in a highly contentious divorce from Shele, a judge ordered the exhumation and Hayes performed the autopsy and issued a death certificate identifying the cause of death as homicide.

Jurors also viewed a jailhouse surveillance video showing Covlin in conversation with a fellow prisoner.

Covlin is seen flexing an arm in a manner, according to Hayes, consistent with a chokehold, which the doctor determined to be Shele’s cause of death.

“The folding of his [Covlin’s] arm and the elbow is exactly how a chokehold is done … this is how a chokehold is applied,” Hayes said.

Judge Pickholz instructed the jury to draw no conclusion from the video, which had no sound, that Covlin was demonstrating how Shele had died.

Shele’s death came days after she asked a lawyer for advice on removing Covlin from her will; he was the sole beneficiary of her estate, which would receive a $1.6 million from a life insurance policy upon her death.

He was indicted in November 2015 and faces 25 years to life in prison if convicted.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
