«Breaking News» BUMBLE AT THE TEST: England dug deep to claim victory in fifth Test

Jimmy Anderson took his last opportunity of The Oval Test to claim a famous piece of history as he completed England's 118-run victory by becoming the world's most successful pace bowler ever.

Anderson was billed as the headline act, in search of the one wicket he still needed.

But until his late, late intervention, it was opener Rahul (149) and Pant (114) who lit up a slate-grey final instalment before England bowled India out for 345.

Sportsmail's DAVID LLOYD takes us through his own perspective on the action...

England had to dig deep

A day five pitch and England started full of anticipation but Virat Kohli got the roller right by choosing the biggest, heaviest thing to squeeze all the life out of this pitch.

You know it's as dead as a dodo when your two premier fast bowlers in Jimmy Anderson and Stuart Broad with nearly a thousand wickets between them had the keeper stood up. But England dug deep to have the final word..

Pant passed his big Test

This was wonderful batting from KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant to give India something special at the end of the series. I saw plenty of Pant in the IPL where he had a strike-rate of 176!

These two were the premier batsmen in the IPL this year and showed adaptability in the longer format here.

Pant just loves hitting sixes but he has learnt how to bat in Test cricket very quickly…

Anderson will go on and on

Anderson keeps on going! What a fantastic achievement to go past Glenn McGrath as the highest wicket-taking fast bowler in Test history.

And with the last wicket of a momentous series! Jimmy is truly one of the greatest of all time. It's been fabulous to watch his career from that young kid from Burnley who just used to try to get it down there as fast as he could.

He started off as Banksy and has finished off as Rembrandt. An absolute artist and unlike Alastair Cook is going on and on….

Fans flock to the Oval

The crowds at the Kia Oval have been absolutely outstanding, with 95,000 of them here over the first four days.

Surrey do the Test match experience wonderfully well and the ground development and facilities are all top class. It's all a contrast to the fourth Test at the Ageas Bowl where not a single day was sold out.

Major matches for major grounds….

Give peas a chance

What a Test. What a memorable five days! So busy have we been in the commentary box that we've had to have lunch on the hoof with trays on our knees.

One day fish pie was on the menu. I were in for that!

I ordered peas but was told they didn't have any. I was very disappointed because, as John Lennon once said, we should give peas a chance…..

Keaton Jennings has a big fan

Ed Smith has been talking about his first summer as national selector and deserves a big tick for getting Jos Buttler in the side.

But what about Keaton Jennings? All the indications would suggest he survives and will be heading to what it is hoped will be calmer waters in Sri Lanka.

He's found life difficult this summer but to having the backing of the big man in Smith is no bad thing…..

Taggs is having a ball

My wife 'Vipers' went home early after her trip to the smoke.

I have to say she's been fretting over the dog, waking me up at 7am each day asking me to ring home and check if she's ok.

I can report that 'Taggs' has been with my son Steve and by all accounts is having an absolute ball. Only had two accidents in the kitchen which is good going for her….

A night out with the Chelsea set

I've gone all upmarket on this trip south. Had another great time at Brinkley's in swanky west London where all the beautiful people go. What a restaurant that is.

I were totally out of my depth.

It's next door to the Hollywood Arms and that was absolutely full of the Chelsea set. Champagne was flowing but all I wanted was a decent pint….

Curry night was a no-brainer

But I've been short of my usual curry fix during this Test. I had been invited to Gopals in Soho but sadly that's now been withdrawn as there were too many on the table and I was the one who was biffed.

I did have a fail-safe on Monday night in the nearby Kennington Tandoori where the owner is a brain surgeon! So I jumped on a table in there….

Test cricket is alive and kicking

What a five-Test series this has been, very competitive and played in a great spirit. India have done themselves proud but England won the big moments.

It was really good from Joe Root to delay the new ball and have the confidence in Adil Rshid to make a big impact.

The final day was as good as we've seen and Test match cricket is very much alive. See you in Sri Lanka. Don't be late!

But ...

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
