«Breaking News» How Britain's bank fat cats pocketed £18m in a year, despite more compensation pay-outs and fines

The bosses of Britain's biggest banks trousered £17.9 million between them last year as profits rose across the industry.

Chief executives at Barclays, HSBC, Lloyds and Royal Bank of Scotland all raked in multi-million pound sums – despite another year of compensation pay-outs and fines.

The figures will spark concern that City pay remains out of control, more than a decade after big banks caused the financial crisis which almost blew up Western capitalism.

The best-paid boss among the so-called Big Four High Street banks was Antonio Horta-Osorio of Lloyds, with the 55-year-old pocketing £6.3 million

Luke Hildyard, of the High Pay centre, said: 'It's clear that pay is a key driver of corporate culture – and the culture of banks involved with PPI mis-selling, Libor manipulation, money laundering, tax dodging and a host of other malpractices was pretty rotten. 

'It's hard to have confidence that the industry is really focused on serving the interests of wider society, as opposed to just enriching top bankers, when executives continue to enjoy such wildly disproportionate pay awards.'

John Flint, 50, of HSBC, was the next highest-earning chief executive. Flint took charge of the bank in February and was paid £4.6 million for the remaining ten months of the year

The 55-year-old pocketed £6.3 million, down from £6.4 million a year earlier, meaning he has now earned more than £50 million since taking the helm in 2011.

Lloyds made a profit of £6 billion last year, up 13 per cent on 2017. 

The lender set aside an extra £750 million to compensate customers mis-sold toxic payment protection insurance.

It has also been battling to refund victims of a £1bn fraud at the Reading branch of Hbos, which was bought by Lloyds in 2008.

Flint took charge of the bank in February and was paid £4.6 million for the remaining ten months of the year.

Profits at the lender climbed 15.9 per cent to £15.3 billion.

Barclays chief executive Jes Staley, 62, was paid £3.4 million, down £500,000 on the previous year, because his bonus was docked after he wrongly tried to unmask a whistleblower.

The bank made a profit of £3.5 billion, down 1 per cent on 2017. It shelled out £2.2 billion for fines and compensation.

Bringing up the rear for pay was 61-year-old Ross McEwan, head of taxpayer-backed RBS, who was given a £91,000 pay rise and earned £3.6 million.

RBS profits more than doubled to £1.6bn, in a year when it axed 431 bank branches – hitting rural and coastal towns across the country.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
