Striker Marcus Rashford scored a second-half winner as a young and much-changed England avoided an unprecedented fourth successive defeat by beating Switzerland 1-0 in a friendly international on Tuesday.
The Manchester United forward clinically side-footed the ball home at the back post in the 54th minute at Leicester City's King Power Stadium after an over-hit corner was swung back in by Kyle Walker.
It was Rashford's fifth goal for England in 27 matches
Defender Danny Rose turned in a man-of-the-match display in England's hard-fought victory
ENGLAND (3-5-2)
JACK BUTLAND - 6
Obviously a man bereft of confidence, evident with two lapse passes in the opening moments. Butland did intervene twice in the first half to bail England out though.
KYLE WALKER – 6.5
Delicious cross for Marcus Rashford’s opener from the right after 54 minutes. Defended well enough and this was generally another positive evening in a back three.
JAMES TARKOSWSKI - 6
Occasionally difficult evening in this system for the Burnley defender, who is not naturally gifted in possession. But won his headers and perfected the basics.
England goalkeeper Jack Butland spreads himself to deny Switzerland's Mario Gavranovic
HARRY MAGUIRE – 6.5
England’s most assured at the back in front of an excitable home crowd. The lack of zip to the game meant Maguire did not venture forward too often.
TRENT ALEXANDER-ARNOLD – 6.5
A lively threat on the right, Alexander-Arnold’s movement off the ball often goes unnoticed but gives an extra dimension. His delivery is always a threat.
RUBEN LOFTUS-CHEEK - 6
Desperately needs to be playing consistently if he is to harness obvious talent. Had his moments, although lucky to escape punishment for an apparent stamp.
Striker Danny Welbeck has an effort blocked by Switzerland goalkeeper Yann Sommer
ERIC DIER – 5.5
Jordan Henderson has the shirt and does not seem likely to lose it. Dier can be neat and tidy but is not incisive enough for a midfielder with the armband.
FABIAN DELPH - 6
Always works hard in what is now a relatively unfamiliar midfield role. But hadn’t played a single minute this season and that was clear.
DANNY ROSE - 8
Seems ready to slug it out with Luke Shaw for a berth on the left. Both have raised standards in a bid to nail that spot down and Rose was excellent.
Eric Dier was underwhelming in the heart of the England midfield against Switzerland
MARCUS RASHFORD – 7.5
Poacher’s instinct for his goal with a run around the back. Other occasions when Rashford motored on the turn should fill Jose Mourinho with optimism for the weeks ahead.
DANNY WELBECK – 5.5
Simply not a finisher. Held the ball well when dropping deep but lacks that cutting edge required at international level. Missed a decent early chance and was hooked on the hour.
SUBS
Harry Kane (for Welbeck, 61) – 6
Gary Neville questioned his involvement but Kane was still used by Southgate. Looked leggy.
John Stones (for Tarkowski, 61) – 6.5
Courageous block from Xherdan Shaqiri shortly after coming on underlined his importance.
Midfielder Jordan Henderson was sent on in the second-half to protect their slender lead
Jesse Lingard (for Loftus Cheek, 61) – 6.5
Energetic as he was given a run out in midfield and always desperate for the ball.
Jordan Henderson (for Delph, 68) – 6
Composed display as he shored things up. Looks more and more measured with each cap.
Subs not used: Pickford, McCarthy, Bettinelli, Gomez, Gray
MANAGER: GARETH SOUTHGATE
Will have known this before, but further evidence that his second string are way off the preferred starting XI. England were not slick enough.
Switzerland (3-5-1-1): Sommer 6.5; Schar 6.5, Djourou 6, Akanji 6 (Megmedi 46, 6); Lichsteiner 6, Zakaria 7 (Fernandes 66, 6), Xhaka 6.5, Freuler 6.5 (Zuber 67, 6), Rodriguez 6.5 (Moubandje 46, 6); Shaqiri 7 (Seferovic 80); Gavranovic 6 (Ajeti 66, 6)
Subs not used: Mvogo, Kobel, Klose, Mbabu, Embolo, Sow
Manager: Vladimir Petkovic 6
Ref: Clement Turpin (FRA) 6
Might have been slightly lenient with Loftus-Cheek before the break but allowed the game to flow.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.
Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
