«Breaking News» Little to split Canelo vs GGG in rematch avoids as fans take to Twitter

The controversy that mired the original contest between Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin was thankfully absent in Saturday night's rematch, but there was precious little to separate them.

Last September's bout in Las Vegas ended as a split draw, with one of the judges, Adalaide Byrd, widely ridiculed for scoring it 118-110 in favour of Alvarez when many observers handed the contest narrowly to Golovkin.

This time around, the judges' verdicts only served to illustrate how little there was between the fighters.

The official scorecard for the Canelo Alvarez vs Gennady Golovkin fight illustrated how close the rematch was, with two narrow decisions for the Mexican and the other scorecard level

Judges Dave Moretti and Steve Weisfeld both scored it 115-113 in favour of Alvarez, while Glenn Feidman had the contest level at 114-114.

But Sportsmail's boxing correspondent Jeff Powell, at ringside, scored the contest 116-113 in favour of Golovkin, underlining the fine margins in the fight.

Powell wrote: 'I had him winning 116-113. But some of the rounds were close and the prize only fell to Alvarez by dint of the scoring of the last round.

'Two of the judges gave the 12th to Canelo and that score prevented another draw, albeit a less contentious one this time.

'So we ended up with two official cards of 115-113 with the third equal.

'Fair enough, perhaps, given the closeness of some rounds but Golovkin's immediate angst was understandable.'

With so little between them, Golovkin was understandably disappointed afterwards but was magnanimous in defeat, saying: 'I think I did enough to win but I'm not complaining.

'Canelo fought a great fight and this is why we have the judges. And the new judges were good judges.'

Those watching around the world also found it difficult to split the two.

Amir Khan wrote on Twitter: 'What a fight. I gave the fight to Canelo. It was toe to toe action, very exciting. Canelo surprised us all with the come forward pressure game plan. Well done to both Canelo and GGG. Boxing needed this.'

Carl Frampton judged it the other way, with his card 116-113 in favour of Golovkin. He wrote on Twitter: 'In hindsight a lot of the rounds were close. I edged GGG but can we please applaud the smaller man Canelo's chin.'

Caleb Truax tweeted: 'Canelo never took a step backwards the entire fight, landed the cleaner power shots, and worked the body all 12 rds. Deserving winner. Great fight. GGG is a warrior.' [sic]

Former heavyweight world champion George Foreman said: 'Canelo Brave as a Bull! Congrats! Made a puncher Box. I didn't expect this. Need one more between these great fighters.'

Manny Pacquiao saluted Golovkin, tweeting: 'GGG is a warrior'.

He added: 'Way better fight than the first time around', 'The best against the best. What a fight!' and 'Nothing like two iconic fighters going toe to toe for twelve rounds.'

Olympic gold medallist Audley Harrison wrote: 'I just can't see that result - Canelo did a great job but he didn't do enough to win in my opinion. Great fight, but GGG can feel that decision should have gone his way. No third fight for at least a year guys (long rest).'

LA Lakers basketball star LeBron James tweeted: 'One of the best fights I've ever seen!! Ultimate competitors in Canelo and Triple-G!! Salute to the both of you. Could watch y'all fight any day.'

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
