«Breaking News» 'Lawnmower parents' take over from 'helicopter moms'

A new generation of parents are leaving their children unequipped to deal with adversity, teachers and psychologists say.

The 'lawnmower parent' is one who rushes to push down any hurdle that could get in their child's way, relieving them from any inconvenience or hardship.

In an anonymous article for We Are Teachers, one educator revealed their own brush with a 'lawnmower parent' when they were called to the office to pick something up from a student's father.

Thinking it would be something important, like medication or lunch, the teacher was outraged to see the man standing there, holding an insulated water bottle.

The father appeared sheepish, they wrote, and was dressed to go to work.

He told the teacher: 'Remy kept texting me that she needed [the bottle]. I texted back, "Don't they have water fountains at your school?", but I guess she just had to have it out of the bottle'.

The educator defines lawnmower parents as those who 'go to whatever lengths necessary to prevent their child from having to face adversity, struggle, or failure'.

'Instead of preparing children for challenges, they mow obstacles down so kids won't experience them in the first place,' the teacher wrote.

While the article does defend the parents, and notes they generally have very good intentions, the teacher says lawnmower parenting can have a very dire effect on a child's development.

'In raising children who have experienced minimal struggle, we are not creating a happier generation of kids,' they wrote.

'We are creating a generation that has no what idea what to do when they actually encounter struggle. A generation who panics or shuts down at the mere idea of failure.

'A generation for whom failure is far too painful, leaving them with coping mechanisms like addiction, blame, and internalization.'

Other experts have slammed the concept of 'lawnmower parents'. Psychologist Stephanie Samar told ABC 'lawnmower parents' were depriving their children of a chance to learn how to fight their own battles and solve problems.

'If you say, "Oh, I took care of this for you", it inadvertently gives that message of "you can't do this yourself, you can't succeed",' she said.

'That can lead to other problematic things - maybe increased anxiety, low distress tolerance - [a] discomfort that comes with having conflict or helplessness about their situation.'

Other parents have also had a dig at 'lawnmower parents', with many joking having their child physically mow the lawn on a Saturday is the closest they would ever come to employing the technique.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
