«Breaking News» Experts warn of higher prevalence of snakes due to arrival of spring

Reptile experts have warned the Australian public to be on the lookout for snakes due to the arrival of spring.

Untrained members of the public are urged not to approach snakes.

When spring arrives snakes go out in search of mating partners, sun, and food.

They possibly have not eaten for months and are subsequently very hungry, and can wander into people's houses and gardens in search of food, Dr Timothy Jackson, from the University of Melbourne Australian Venom Research Unit, told 9 News.

'When they're warm enough, they get hungry - they may not have eaten for months. They get other urges too...spring is the season for love,' Dr Jackson said.

Queensland snake catcher Tony Harrison that instead of approaching snakes, untrained members of the public should take photographs and contact a professional.

He says people often misidentify snake species.

'For your average person it's hard to tell which one's which,' he said.

'If you see a snake don't go and stir them up. Take a photo from a distance.

'It's human nature to go and stir a snake up.

'What will happen is the snake will defend itself, and that snake could put you in hospital.'

New South Wales snake catcher Andrew Melrose says snakes usually only bite people as a last resort.

He says they usually only do so in self-defence.

'The best advice I give to anyone is to avoid a bite, if you do see it the best thing is just leave it alone,' he says.

'Call the experts and don't try to catch or killing it because the snakes will usually (not be interested in) you.'

People should also take measures to reduce the chances of dangerous encounters with snakes.

Such measures include removing pets' water dishes from entry and exit points, monitoring children and pets, repairing any holes in door and window screens, keeping doors closed in warmer weather, throwing out uneaten pet food in order to reduce the prevalence of rats and mice, not leaving shoes at doorsteps, wearing leather gloves when gardening, keeping shelves at least 30 centimetres from the ground, and trimming or removing overgrown plants and weeds.

Last May the World Health Organization passed a resolution declaring snake bites a global health priority, estimating that between  81 000 to 138 000 people globally die from snake bites each year.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
