«Breaking News» Elizabeth Smart kidnapper to be released from prison

One of Elizabeth Smart's kidnappers will be released from prison next week after 15 years behind bars.

Wanda Barzee, 72, will be released Sept. 19 after the Utah Board of Pardons and Parole determined it had miscalculated the time she previously served in federal custody.

She will be under federal supervision for five years.

She held Elizabeth Smart captive for nine months in the woods along with her husband Brian Mitchell between 2002 and 2003 after kidnapping the then 14-year-old from her bedroom in Salt Lake City.

Wanda Barzee, 72, will be released from federal prison next week, 15 years after being jailed for kidnapping Elizabeth Smart in Salt Lake City, Utah. She was sentenced to 15 years in 2010 but will be freed because she spent seven years in custody while awaiting trial

They knew her because Smart's family had hired Mitchell to do handiwork around their home.

For nine months, they held her captive in the woods where Mitchell raped her on a daily basis and called her his 'wife'.

She was saved when a member of the public recognized Mitchell and Barzee while they were out walking with her.

In 2010, seven years after Smart was rescued, Barzee pleaded guilty to kidnapping.

She was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment but was given credit for already spending seven of them.

Mitchell was given back to back life sentences.

The surprising decision to allow Barzee's release comes just a month after the parole board said she would not be released until 2024.

The parole board said previously that Barzee would be released in January 2024 after it denied her an early parole following a hearing that she chose not to attend.

At the June hearing, her attorney questioned the calculation of her release date, which led the Utah board to look into it. Lawyer Scott Williams said Tuesday he's appreciative the board reviewed it and agreed with his assessment.

Williams said he's not concerned about Barzee being a danger to the community, but declined to say why he believes that.

Smart, now 30, didn't immediately have comment on the pending release on Tuesday.

In June, Smart urged the parole board not to grant the woman's release by saying she still carried a book which contains revelations her husband said he received from God telling him to keep Smart.

In June, Smart said Barzee (pictured in 2010) was still a danger to the community because she was attached to Mitchell's ideas about the kidnapping

She said the manuscript also contains other 'disturbing and dangerous ideas,' though it is not clear how she knows she had it.

'''In this manuscript were the "revelations" Mitchell "received" from God to kidnap myself and six other young girls to be his wife.

'It also "revealed" his other highly disturbing and dangerous ideas.'

'This is proof to me that she hasn't changed, and if the prior 15+ years hasn't changed her I don't see how the future years will,' Smart said in an Instagram post in June, adding: 'I do not think I'm a vindictive or vengeful person.

'If change were truly possible in her case then perhaps parole/release could be justified.

Her father Ed said: 'I would hate for her to have the opportunity to do that again to someone else.'

Smart, now married with two children, has written a book about the harrowing ordeal and helped make a Lifetime movie and documentary about the crime and her life. She is now a child safety activist who regularly gives speeches.

She is expecting her third baby in November.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
