«Breaking News» BAZ BAMIGBOYE: Nicole Kidman and Ralph Fiennes in talks to star in new film

Nicole Kidman and Ralph Fiennes are negotiating to star together in a film about the discovery of Anglo-Saxon treasures at Sutton Hoo.

The actress told me she and Fiennes had read Moira Buffini's script, adapted from John Preston's novel The Dig — a fictionalised look at the excavation of a royal burial chamber in Suffolk in 1939, where a 90ft-long ship was entombed 1,400 years earlier.

Kidman said the 'delicate' screenplay is 'very much about the relationship between Edith Pretty, who owned the land at Sutton Hoo, and Basil Brown, the archaeologist who found what was discovered there'.

She said she was 'excited' to be making a film with Fiennes. 'I've wanted to work with him my whole life,' she said.

The pair caught up with each other at the Telluride Film Festival, where both had world premieres of their respective movies.

Kidman was at the annual festival (held in a box canyon in the Rocky Mountains) with director Karyn Kusama's thriller Destroyer, in which she gives one of the year's top performances as a burnt-out undercover sheriff's deputy in Los Angeles.

Fiennes travelled to the former Colorado mining town with The White Crow — his most accomplished work as a director — about Rudolf Nureyev's defection to the West in 1961. Fiennes also appears in the film as Alexander Pushkin, a mentor of Nureyev (played by ballet dancer Oleg Ivenko in an extraordinary screen debut).

Both films are being shown at the BFI London Film Festival next month.

The Dig will be directed by Simon Stone, an Australian celebrated for his contemporary adaptation of Federico Garcia Lorca's tragedy Yerma, a triumph at the Young Vic with Billie Piper in the central role. 'How brilliant was Billie in that?' Kidman asked.

Fiennes' long-time cinematic partner Gabrielle Tana will produce the film.

Kidman hopes shooting will start next summer. 'The British film industry gave me my great roles, so I'm raring to go,' she said, referring to The Portrait Of A Lady, Eyes Wide Shut and The Hours — for which she won an Academy Award.

No plastic, but oh what a knees-up!

Charlie Stemp said he ran a green regime backstage when he starred in the musical Half A Sixpence.

Emma Williams and Devon-Elise Johnson, who played the love interests of Stemp's character Arthur Kipps, explained that because Stemp was never off stage during the run at the Noel Coward, his dressing room wound up doubling as party central.

'I didn't mind — as long as they didn't use plastic cups!' said Stemp. He added that when he appeared in Hello, Dolly on Broadway with Bette Midler and Bernadette Peters, he bought his fellow cast members metal straws.

We were at a screening of Kipps: Half A Sixpence, filmed at a matinee and evening performance when the musical was on at the Noel Coward last year.

Cameron Mackintosh and David Dolman used four cameras to shoot Half A Sixpence, and then edited the footage down to two hours.

The result is an exuberant delight that captures the essence of H.G. Wells's original story — Kipps: The Story Of A Simple Soul.

The biggest surprise, though, is the dance numbers, choreographed by Andrew Wright. Talk about flash, bang, wallop what a knees-up!

Williams said she cried when she saw the film. 'I spent months either on stage, or watching from the wings. I had no idea it was packed with so many numbers.'

Mackintosh told me the footage was originally shot for archival purposes, but he's now had interest from the BBC and ITV, with the possibility of Kipps being shown on television over Christmas.

Odd couple go green in the South

Viggo Mortensen and Mahershala Ali are superb in director Peter Farrelly's film Green Book.

The movie, loosely based on a true story, is about an Italian-American barman-nightclub fixer known as Tony Lip (Mortensen) who's hired by a classically trained pianist Donald Shirley (Ali) to drive him through the not so welcoming American Deep South in the early Sixties.

Shirley, who's on the road to perform with his trio, gives Lip a copy of The Negro Motorist Green Book, which listed motels, restaurants, snack bars, petrol stations and nightclubs that were welcoming to African-Americans.

I simply surrendered to this beautiful film — it's warm-hearted, but tough. The two men initially eye each other warily, but soon learn to respect each other's strengths and beliefs.

The picture was shown in Toronto (it goes on release here on February 8) at a time when African-Americans, and some people of colour here in the UK, are concerned by what's known as 'travelling while black'.

That is, you could be going about your everyday business and those in authority will, for some reason, take issue.

I was once asked by a policeman what I was doing outside a nice house in North-West London. Turns out I was simply going home, while black.

Green Book makes it all pretty easy to comprehend. It's a charming surprise of a film.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
