«Breaking News» Amir Khan unfazed by Samuel Vargas' threats ahead of welterweight clash

They describe him as an animal and a beast. They call him The Bull. He says he's going knock out King Khan the first time he hits him.

No, this is not Marvellous Marvin Hagler, Hands-of-Stone Duran or Tommy Hitman Hearns reborn.

This is somebody called Samuel Vargas from Colombia via Canada with bad beatings along the way whenever he has ventured into the ring with such modern world class operators as Terence Crawford and Errol Spence Jnr.

So Amir Khan smiled as he listened to the threats and menaces when they came face to face in Birmingham.

Senor Vargas said of Bolton's Olympic silver medallist and two time world champion: 'He's an old man. He took a career-ending KO from Canelo (Alvarez). He's over the hill. He's damaged goods.'

Khan glanced knowingly at his promoter Eddie Hearn and they began planning bigger things beyond this Saturday night in the Birmingham Arena and said: 'Eddie is the man who can get me back into the big fights after I get back in the groove against Vargas.'

They are thinking Manny Pacquiao 'in an international mega-fight' and Kell Brook in a British blockbuster 'which will sell out any stadium in England.'

'He's an old man... he's over the hill. He's damaged goods,' Vargas claimed of the British star

As for Vargas, Khan said: 'They are trying to get into my head but they know they are the one's in trouble. He's not really good enough to be in the same ring with me but I hope he's useful in giving me the few rounds I need.

'I'm really only doing this because my comeback against Phil Lo Greco was all over in 39 seconds.

'If that had gone longer it could have been a title fight this weekend. But I need the work. Then Eddie and I can talk about what's next. Once I'm back in the old routine.'

Vargas and his team are trading into the perception of the glass jaw but Khan says: 'Even if it were true he's not good enough to land his idea of a big punch on me.

'But it's not true anyway. Let me remind him that I'm coming back down to welterweight, my natural division in which I've never been beaten. I've been knocked out when I've moved up.

'I had to go up two divisions to get the big fight I'd always wanted, against Canelo. I was winning the fight until this great boxer landed his big middleweight punch on me.

'That happened because I've always been willing to fight anyone. It took big balls to fight Canelo but from now on I'll be staying at welterweight. Sometimes having big balls gets you in trouble. I won't be taking that risk again.

Joe Goossen, the veteran American trainer of many a world champion who has taken Khan's comeback in firm hand, wouldn't let him. He says: 'Amir has the fastest hands I've ever seen and he has knockout power at 147 lbs.

'When he was changing trainers and called and asked me if I was interested I thought, "Wow, this is the one fighter I would really like to work with".'

Goossen is old school USA right down to the denim clothing he always wears, including when he's working a corner.

He's been asked to dress in the more formal cornerman's wear customary here and says: 'In America you could wear bathing trunks and a tank top but I'm easy and I'll wear what they want Saturday night. The main thing is not to detract from my great boxer. This about Amir, not me.'

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
