Allan McGregor escapes SFA punishment following Kristoffer Ajer clash

Rangers goalkeeper Allan McGregor will face no SFA action over an altercation with Celtic's Kristoffer Ajer during Sunday's Old Firm clash.

Caught by television cameras kicking out at the Norwegian on the ground in the 25th minute of Celtic's 1-0 win, the Scotland international was widely expected to face retrospective punishment after an SFA review.

Despite Ibrox boss Steven Gerrard admitting he would speak to his keeper after he 'lashed out', however, three former match officials convened to review footage of the incident and failed to reach a unanimous agreement to take the matter to Fast Track proceedings.

McGregor could have been offered a two-match suspension by new SFA compliance officer Clare Whyte.

The latest in a series of contentious disciplinary decisions by the governing body this season, Ibrox striker Alfredo Morelos had his red card against Aberdeen rescinded, while Steven Naismith of Hearts escaped disciplinary charges for a clash with Celtic's Jonny Hayes.

New IFAB Laws of the Game published for season 2018-19 stated: 'The Laws embody the unacceptability of unsafe play in their disciplinary phrases, e.g. 'reckless challenge' (caution = yellow card/YC) and 'endangering the safety of an opponent' or 'using excessive force' (sending-off = red card/RC).'

Despite a discussion with the referee, McGregor was not booked for the incident
