«Breaking News» Seven things you missed from the Singapore Grand Prix

It was not the most eventful Singapore Grand Prix in its 10-year history but Lewis Hamilton won't care as his fourth win in five races extended his championship lead to 40 points.

Hamilton cruised to victory in front of Max Verstappen and Sebastian Vettel at the night race which produced little on-track action.

But there were still plenty of talking points. Here Sportsmail takes a look at the seven things you may have missed.

Hamilton given apology

Only once did Hamilton look under pressure in Singapore and it came on lap 38 when he got caught up with backmarkers and was nearly passed by Verstappen as a result.

In the podium room after, race director Charlie Whiting made a point to apologise to the Brit for not doing more to allow him an easier route through the lapped runners.

Parc Ferme lights up dull race

While it was not the most entertaining race in Singapore, Marina Bay's parc ferme at least looked glitzy enough. Hamilton parked his winning Mercedes on an LED podium that featured highlights of all the race action underneath and behind the the car.

It is another typical Liberty Media addition but it is unclear if it is a new regular feature or just a one-off special for a night race.

Safety car run continues

This was the 11th Singapore Grand Prix and Esteban Ocon's crash on the opening lap ensured that the circuit continued a trend of having had a safety car deployed at every single event it has held.

Since the event's 2008 debut, the safety car has now appeared 15 times and it has been needed on the opening lap for the past three races.

Force India forced into Twitter delete

There was fury at Force India when Sergio Perez and Sergey Sirotkin collided, and on Twitter the team accused the Russian of having 'torpedoed' their driver.

But the team hastily deleted the tweet and followed up with an apology after seeing that it was Perez who was fully to blame for the crash, with the Mexican being given a drive through penalty.

 

Alonso the lone star

It is not often Alonso and McLaren have been able to run a perfect race in their four years together but the stars aligned for the Woking outfit, who were a distant best of the rest on Sunday.

Behind the big three teams, Alonso secured a very comfortable seventh and the Spaniard at one point had the fastest lap accolade too, only for Kevin Magnussen to snatch it away.

Lewis is finally caught

No driver could touch Hamilton on the track, and only the world champion's team were able to catch him at Marina Bay.

In the typical post-race Mercedes celebrations, Hamilton usually manages to scamper away from the champagne spraying after a team photo. 

But on this occasion two team members caught up and cornered the Brit, resigned to his fate, before giving him a soaking.

Simply Red Bull

It may be a street race, and an attractive one at that with its under the lights appeal, but Singapore still doesn't pull in the celebrities like Monaco does.  

Famous faces were not easy to spot at Marina Bay although comedian Jimmy Carr was a guest at Mercedes, even getting to sit in Hamilton's car, while singer Mick Hucknall spent time with the Red Bull team.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
