«Breaking News» Quick-thinking wildlife rescuers untangle five squirrels after 'Gordian Knot' of tails cut off blood

Wildlife rehabilitators managed to free five baby squirrels and help bring them back to health after their hairy tails had become tangled up in what can only be described as a 'Gordian Knot'.

The Wildlife Rehabilitation Center at Wisconsin Humane Society had to think creatively to release the cute creatures in a safe way after someone found them bound together and reported the problem.

Working hard not to accidentally snip areas of their tails, rescuers believe they may have saved the squirrels' lives by not injuring the area they need to stay warm and on balance.

'The tails of these five juvenile Gray Squirrel siblings had become hopelessly entangled with the long-stemmed grasses and strips of plastic their mother used as nest material, and with each other!' they wrote on their Facebook page alongside images of the small rodents.

'A predicament that, without careful and quick intervention, would at the least cost each of these squirrels their very important tail (needed for balance and warmth), and likely their lives.'

The post explained how the task was made trickier as the members of the Sciuridae family were extremely fidgety and scared to be handled.

On top of that, the number of squirrels tied together made the task riskier but the carers were determined to ensure they didn't suffer any more damage to their body tissues after the entanglement took a toll on their blood flow.

'You can imagine how wiggly and unruly (and nippy!) this frightened, distressed ball of squirrelly energy was, so our first step was to anesthetize all five of them at the same time,' they explained.

'With that accomplished, we began working on unraveling the "Gordian Knot" (Google it) of tightly tangled tails and nest material. It was impossible to tell whose tail was whose, and we were increasingly concerned because all of them had suffered from varying degrees of tissue damage to their tails caused by circulatory impairment.'

It took about 20 minutes to free the young squirrels but they had already suffered damage due to restricted blood flow

The rarely-seen occurrence is believed to have happened as a result of the mother's nest materials meshing them together.

'Bit by bit we snipped away at the grass-and-plastic knot with scissors, being very careful to make sure we weren't snipping anyone's tail in the process. It took about 20 minutes to free the young squirrels. And soon after they began to recover from anesthesia,' the post continued.

They added that the little creatures are now doing well but some of them have a way to go when it comes to resembling the full-haired tree-climbing and nut-gathering animals we usually see.

'Now, one day later, they are all bright-eyed, and three of the five are "bushy-tailed," but we'll need to monitor all of them for a couple of days to watch for tail necrosis caused by impaired blood flow.'

Despite a happy ending, Facebook followers have fallen in love with the gray squirrels and have been keen for a follow-up on their development.

Nicole Maratovah Czarnecki commented on the social media post: 'Talk about family ties! At least the squirrels are okay now.'

Lindsey Diehl added: 'Hello! Any update on the squirrels' conditions?'

The post has been shared hundreds of times and people have donated a combined $513 so far to help the center care for the squirrels.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
