«Breaking News» Fans of the Forties attend Goodwood Revival festival

If you go down to Goodwood today you're in for a big surprise as motoring enthusiasts don their finest retro gear for the annual vintage motorsports festival.

Friday sees the Goodwood Revival festival return for its 20th year of classic cars and period dress for three days.

This year will see a very special addition to the fleet with the 'Rolls-Royce of Rolls-Royces' owned by the Queen going up for auction on Saturday- with the exclusive limousine expected to sell for a whopping £2 million.

With this in mind excitable attendees dressed to impress arriving in Chichester in a myriad of vintage costumes from the classic wartime 40s fashion to the sky-high hemlines of the swinging 60s.

One school group had even crafted a series of evacuation boxes to wear at the event while the teachers dressed in Dig for Victory dungarees.

Elsewhere women emulated the fabulous 50s in a series of polka dot A-line skirts as they inspected antique cars at the Goodwood Motor Circuit.

The festival, which started in 1998 seeks to celebrate the golden age of Goodwood Motor Circuit, which was open between 1948 and 1966.

In that time the track held classic races such as the Tourist Trophy for sports cars and the Glover Trophy for grand prix cars.

The festival describes its event as 'a magical step back in time to the romance and glamour of motor racing as it used to be in Goodwood's heyday'.

The circuit was established by Freddie March, the 9th Duke of Richmond. However, it was closed in 1966. The Duke's grandson Charles, the Earl of March, revived it in 1998.

During the Revival, modern cars are not allowed into the circuit while pre-1966 aircrafts also feature. The 2018 iteration will celebrate the 100 years of the RAF.

Friday marks the Revival's official practice day where the drivers and riders fight it out for the best positions on the starting grids at the races.

At the end of the day, there will be the first race of the weekend, the Kinrara Trophy, which is open to the closed-cockpit GT cars from before 1963, which is likely to feature Aston Martin DB4 GTs and Ferrari 250 SWBs.

One of the highlights of the weekend will be the auctioning of the 'Rolls-Royce of Rolls-Royces' - with the exclusive limousine which was used by the Queen is expected to sell for a whopping £2 million.

Just 18 Rolls-Royce Phantom IV models were built and they were only sold to Heads of State.

This 1955 Landaulet model, where the roof at the rear can be opened, was retained by Rolls-Royce for the exclusive use of the British Royal Family.

And in 1959 it entered the Royal Mews and was used for numerous events over the years.

The luxurious limousine, known as chassis 4BP5, was kitted out with electric windows, reading lamps, a special radio with two loudspeakers, interior fans and a mohair rug.

It is similar to the Rolls-Royce Phantom IV which transported Meghan Markle to Windsor Castle for this year's Royal Wedding.

The Rolls-Royce is currently owned by Bentley and is one of eight cars from the British firm's heritage fleet which are being sold by Bonhams on Saturday at the Goodwood Revival in West Sussex.

Bonhams has given it a guide price of up to £2 million, potentially making it one of the most valuable Rolls-Royces to be sold at auction in recent years.

It will be sold alongside a 1985 Rolls-Royce 'Centenary' Silver Spur Saloon, which was the 100,000th Rolls-Royce built and used by Princess of Wales. It has a £100,000 guide price.

A 2002 Rolls-Royce Corniche Convertible, which was the last Roller built at the Crewe factory, is expected to sell for £220,000 having been driven just 229 miles from new.

Bonhams is also selling a 1979 Phantom VI, which was occasionally used by the Royal Household and is expected to sell for £600,000.

Malcolm Barber, motor car specialist at Bonhams, said: 'This is a remarkable collection of cars, and one that beautifully illustrates the history of one of the most celebrated and prestigious companies in the world.

'Rolls-Royce motor cars have been present at countless historic events in recent British history, and the Heritage Fleet encapsulates the most significant models produced by the marque.

'We are delighted to have been chosen to offer such an important collection, and it illustrates the longstanding connection and mutual respect held between Bonhams and the most important automotive companies and individual collections in the world.'

The first Phantom IV was completed in July 1950 having been ordered by the then HRH Princess Elizabeth.

Rolls-Royce went onto build a further 17 examples of the Phantom IV, with foreign customers including the Shah of Iran (two cars), General Franco (three cars), the Ruler of Kuwait (three cars), with the Aga Khan, King Faisal of Iraq, the Prince Regent of Iraq, and Prince Talal al Souad Ryal of Saudi Arabia getting one apiece.

The British Royal Family had the use of five, with the car offered by Bonhams known as a chassis number '4BP5'.

It is thought there are only 16 Phantom IV models left and this is the first to be sold on the open market in seven

The majority of races take place on Saturday including the Fordwater Trophy, and the Goodwood Trophy, the race for grand prix and voiturette cars built between 1930-1950. Other Saturday highlights include the Barry Sheene Memorial Trophy for motorcycles and St Mary's Trophy for touring cars.

Saturday is also Ladies Day, where the frocks from the period will be showcased. There will also be a Bonhams sale of historic cars and racing memorabilia.

Sunday will feature the Royal Automobile Club TT Celebration race, the most prestigious race of the whole Revival. It will feature classic Aston Martin, Jaguar, and Ferrari automobiles that took part in the famous Tourist Trophy races in the past.

The day ends with the Prize Giving ceremony where the Duke of Richmond and Gordon hands out the prizes and medals.

There is no compulsory dress code, however, the festival is a Revival after all and its website says that 'the vast majority of Revival visitors dress in period style with many going to great lengths to achieve that authentic look. The resulting step-back-in-time spectacle plays a key role in making the Revival such a unique event'.

'While you're not required to dress up (unless you qualify for central Paddock access, in which case a jacket and tie is necessary for gentlemen, and a dress or suit for the ladies), you'll feel much more involved if you do.'

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
