Experts have raised fears that massive flooding from Hurricane Florence could spread deadly snakes from their wetland habitats across the Carolinas.
As Florence smacked the North Carolina coast early on Friday, forecasts called for storm surges of up to 11 feet in areas and localized rain exceeding 40 inches over the next few days.
The floodwaters could quickly allow deadly snakes to spread from their typical habitats through city streets and homes.
Of top concern was the cottonmouth, also known as the water moccasin, a strong swimmer that lives in marshes and shallow waterways.

Copperheads, already found throughout the state, were also a concern however. Both are venomous vipers.
'They inject venom, which causes tissue destruction, platelet loss, causes bleeding, it can cause death,' Gerald O'Malley with Grand Strand Hospital told the Sun News in South Carolina.
Anyone bitten by a viper should seek immediate medical attention at a hospital - though that could be difficult for many until floodwaters recede.
In Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, Thad Bowman with Alligator Adventure Zoo said he was working to secure all of the animals to keep them safe from the storm - and to prevent any from escaping.
The reptile zoo has alligators, pythons, anacondas and a Black Mamba.
In a flash bulletin at 11pm on Thursday, the National Hurricane Center said that Florence was 50 miles south of Morehead City, North Carolina, and 60 miles southeast of Wilmington.
The storm had maximum sustained winds of 90mph and was moving northwest at six miles per hour.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.
Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
