«Breaking Pic News» Mothers share their must-have hospital bag essentials

Mothers have been sharing their advice to pregnant women on what to pack in their hospital bag ready for their trip to the maternity ward.

Taking to Mumsnet, a heavily pregnant woman kicked off the thread, asking for tips on what she should include.

And women who have already experienced the trip to the labour ward soon chimed in with their useful suggestions, recommending everything from non-slip socks, to emergency painkillers and the best disposable knickers.

Others even suggested taking a plastic jug to help lessen the pain of going to the toilet for the first time after childbirth, while one suggested a bottle with a straw to help moisten dry mouths between bouts of gas and air during labour.

Taking to the parenting forum, the expectant mum wrote: 'Looking to grab a few things over the next few weeks which will end up in my hospital bag.

'So looking for the best/most recommended brands for breast pads, maternity towels, nipple shields and disposable knickers.

'Any recommendations for the above would be greatly appreciated!'

And her cry for help was quickly answered by experienced mums, sharing their top tips of what they found useful in the ward, and what they had missed.

Listing the essentials, one pregnant mother wrote: 'Comfy cotton knickers, lip balm, antibacterial hand gel, maternity pads, and some spritz for this time'.

Another revealed that she found non-slip socks useful for walking around the ward, adding: 'I really loved having slipper socks with the grippy rubber bits on the soles. Very safe when walking carrying a newborn.'

And giving an insight into what she regretted not having, another mum said: 'One thing I didn’t pack and regret was a waterbottle with a straw/nozzle as the gas and air really dried my mouth out and the tiny plastic cups were a pain in the a** as I had to make sure I was upright enough to not spill it.'

Agreeing, another admitted the bottle with the straw was a good idea and added adding snacks, an eye mask and earplugs to the basics.

'My essentials were a hand held fan, straw and spray bottle. My poor husband was at his wits end with my instructions of drink, fan and water spray,' a mum remembered.

Meanwhile others shared the best 'disposable' underwear they took with them, with many praising the cheap cotton knickers from Primark.

One wrote: 'Sainsbury’s maternity pads are super comfy. Don't bother with disposable knickers - get some big, cheap black cotton knickers instead. Much more comfortable!'

Another added: 'I was a size ten but got size 12/14 black full style pants from Primark when I had a c-section. Their bf bras were fab too!'

Recommending large briefs and moisturiser, one mother said: 'I'm a 10/12 and got size 14 full briefs - they were a godsend after my emergency c-section as they came up nice and high. I'd recommend packing a good lip balm too, the G&A (gas and air) dried my lips to buggery.'

Meanwhile others suggested a large supply of nappies, phone chargers and nipple cream to the basics of nightwear, toothpaste and washbag products.

'Babies can go through nappies quickly in the early days so bring a good number in your main bag and the rest in the car pack.

'A small plastic jug to pour over my bits for the first time you go to the loo after the birth - sounds random, but if you have the space it can be a big relief', one mum added.

Others suggested bringing light pyjamas in case the ward got too hot, and one recommended a nightgown with buttons at the front to allow for easy skin-to-skin contact.

Listing her essentials, one said: 'Pack flip-flops for the shower to avoid verrucas, a washbag with neutral fragrances because newborns don't usually like overpowering scents, and a dark colour bath towel/hand towel/face cloth to disguise any blood stains.'

She added: 'Nipple cream is good to have, if you use it from the first feed it makes a real difference.'

One mother even suggested to pack a small bag for labour and one night in hospital, and another with extra supplies for a longer stay to be left in the car.

'If you're in hospital for a bit, something to personalise your cubicle a bit like a photo frame or ornament is nice,' one mum wrote.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
