«Breaking News» Woman's Hour host Dame Jenni Murray reveals how she was body-shamed before five stone weight loss

The host of Woman's Hour has revealed the 'distressing' fat-shaming she endured before she lost five stone.

Dame Jenni Murray, 68, said she had been called a 'fat cow' by strangers in street, which described as 'infuriating'.

Speaking at a conference about the benefits of metabolic surgery at King's College London, Jenni said she hadn't had the name-calling since she she had her gastric band fitted in 2015.

At the conference she called for obesity to be considered a 'disease' and not a condition, reports the Express.

Jenni, who has hosted Radio 4's Woman's Hour since 1987, said she 'had tried every diet known to woman or man' but struggled to lose weight.

She said: 'It is very interesting that since I've had this surgery, I don't get called a ''fat cow'' in the street any more and that used to happen frequently, particularly if I was driving my car and overtook some bloke.

And sometimes it was 'fat – other very vulgar words – cow' and it would happen a lot.

'It was overt, it was distressing and it was infuriating.'

WHAT IS THE GLOBAL OBESITY CRISIS?

Almost a quarter of the world's population will be obese in less than 30 years, according to research published in May.

If obesity trends continue, 22 per cent of people around the world will be severely overweight by 2045, up from 14 per cent last year, a study found.

One in eight people, rather than today's one in 11, are also expected to develop type 2 diabetes, the research adds.

Lead author Dr Alan Moses, from the Denmark-based pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk, said: 'These numbers underline the staggering challenge the world will face in the future in terms of numbers of people who are obese, or have type 2 diabetes, or both.

'As well as the medical challenges these people will face, the costs to countries' health systems will be enormous.'

People with type 2 diabetes have an average life expectancy of just 55 due to them being at a much higher risk of heart attacks, stroke and kidney disease.

Tam Fry, a health campaigner from the National Obesity Forum said the findings were 'desperately sad'.

Jenni also theorised that her weight may have stopped her from working in television, as she claims she has had more offers to appear onscreen since losing weight.

She said: 'I was always really rather glad I did radio than television and as I got more and more obese I doubt anyone would have asked me to do television.

'But now I've got a bit thinner they are saying maybe you'd like to come back on to the screen. But I am quite happy on the radio thank you very much.'

She decided to get a gastric band fitted when she was out with her son and they saw an obese woman using a mobility scooter, and he pleaded with her not to end up the same way.

Writing in 2014, Jenni said realising that she could no longer fit into her old swimming costumes and the humiliation of going up several sizes for a new one made her decide to do something about her weight.

She said at the time: 'Something radical has to be done. And reluctantly, I am coming to the conclusion that 'something' is a gastric band.

Only two of 53 European nations are fatter than Britain, a new report revealed earlier this week.

The UN study found that two in three of us are overweight and one in four is obese.

It blamed the crisis on lack of exercise, poor diet and heavy drinking. Campaigners said the figures were frightening and warned that deaths from diabetes and heart disease could spiral without urgent action.

Our obesity rate of 28 per cent is beaten only by Turkey, with 32 per cent, and Malta at 29 per cent. The European average is 23 per cent.

Speaking at a conference...

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
