«Breaking News» Sally Field on falling for 'complicated' Burt Reynolds being sexually abused by her stepfather

Sally Field has opened up ahead of the release of her memoir 'In Pieces,' speaking about being sexually abused as a child by her stepfather and on falling in love at first sight with Burt Reynolds.

In her revealing sit down with Good Morning America, Field, now 71, talks about the lasting pain she experience after being sexually abused as a child by her stepfather, actor Jock Mahoney.

'Sexual child abuse, I think one of the reasons its so damaging is because its so complicated. It isn't just one feeling.'

'And how then do you grow up and have any understanding of what healthy sexuality is. And how is it not always connected to danger, shame and loss- the loss of self,' Field tells Diane Sawyer in the interview about the ensuing depression she battled.

She writes in her memoir that she did not speak to her mother about the abuse at the hands of her late actor, stepfather for decades, until her mother was dying of cancer sometime in 2011.

She also told Sawyer about her storied love and instant connection to the late, great Burt Reynolds, who she first met while filming Smokey and the Bandit (1977).

'We'd known each other about four days. Four days felt like four years. We were deeply entangled. The nature of it wasn't just this was a love affair, there was some ingredient between us that was my care-taking and him needing to be taken care of.'

As clear as her affection is for the late actor, something she also makes clear in her interview, and in her memoir, was that Reynolds was a complex man whose complexities were difficult for Field to navigate.

Though the pair's relationship has been romanticized in Hollywood history, Sally recently told the New York Times their time together was 'confusing and complicated, and not without loving and caring, but really complicated and hurtful to me.'

During the interview with Sawyer a recent clip of Reynolds is played in which he fondly calls Field 'The love of my life. She was the most special woman I have ever dated.'

Field, reacting to the clip says 'I was always flattered when he said that,' then pausing she adds, 'But he was a complicated man.'

Field and Reynolds were lovers and co-stars whose romance began during the filming of 'Smokey and the Bandit' and continued in 'Hooper.'

The 'Smokey and the Bandit' co-stars dated for five years after they met on the set of the 1977 film. The former couple appeared in four films together before calling it quits around 1982.

With a whirlwind romance sparked out of their connection that was as immediate and intense, as was the dark, frightening undertones to their courtship.

Sally claims Reynolds used a cocktail of drugs while filming Smokey and the Bandit writing that he used Percodan, Valium and barbiturates, to ease his panic attacks.

In an interview with Closer Weekly in 2015, Reynolds showed remorse for their break-up that was in part due to her burgeoning career while his had temporarily stagnated.

Reynolds called himself 'the dumbest a**hole ever' for walking away. 'I still love her very much,' he added.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
