«Breaking News» Richard Madden admits he was 'fat and crushingly shy' at school

He won a legion of admirers thanks to his brooding turn as Robb Stark on Game Of Thrones, and is garnering even more fans on the BBC One drama Bodyguard.

But despite his bona-fide heartthrob status, Richard Madden has admitted he wasn't always considered such a hunk.

The 32-year-old actor confessed he was 'fat' and 'crushingly shy' while attending a 'fairly tough high school' in the town of Paisley in his native Scotland.

'I was fat and shy. Crushingly shy, going to what was a fairly tough high school. Aggressive, masculine,' he told The Sun.

'I was a 38in waist when I was 12. I didn't wear denim until I was 19 because denim is hard to take up. My mum couldn't take my jeans up,' he added.

It's not the first time Madden has brought up his childhood, previously telling Flaunt magazine that if he weren't acting, he'd be a 'shy, fat kid living in Scotland with no girlfriend.'

The actor also touched cryptically on his relationship with Nocturnal Animals actress Ellie Bamber, 21, revealing: 'I am sleeping with someone. I am very happy with someone.'

He has certainly won a legion of fans with his latest turn in BBC One's Bodyguard, which has become the biggest new drama on British television in more than a decade.

The series - starring Keeley Hawes as the Home Secretary and Richard Madden as the officer assigned to protect her - has achieved consolidated viewing figures of 10.4 million for its first episode.

This is the highest launch figure for any new drama across all UK channels since 2006, the corporation said.

In his next role, he appears as John Reid, Elton John's manager and first boyfriend, in the upcoming film Rocketman about the singer's rise to fame.

The role may help Madden, who has gained a huge female following, in his desire to escape being objectified. He told Mr Porter he is concerned that his sex appeal masks his abilities.

'I worry sometimes about it affecting my job,' he admitted.

'If people go, "Oh, you know, he's that hunky thing", then it undermines that actually I'm an actor, and I'm trying really hard to be good at it.'

The 32-year-old actor ...

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
