«Breaking News» Rashford's cool head was welcome sight for England boss Southgate amid concerns over talisman Kane

It’s one of those horrible scenarios that keeps you awake at night. Up there with: ‘Have I locked the front door?’ or: ‘is Brexit still going to be there when I get up?’ What happens to England if Harry Kane gets injured?

We got a glimpse here. Kane, mercifully, got the rest others craved more than he did. Before the knockabout with Switzerland at a less-than-full King Power Stadium, Gary Neville nailed what pretty much everyone was thinking.

‘I am concerned about Harry Kane,’ he said, before pointing out that the Tottenham talisman, who famously wants to start every game, has played 175 matches since 2015 and looks, to be frank, shattered.

Neville claimed he could see it during the final half an hour of the last-16 tie with Colombia, when Kane ‘literally could not move’.

Few would argue with him. And so, with Raheem Sterling injured, we got Marcus Rashford and Danny Welbeck up front. In a tepid first 45 minutes, which saw most of the action at the goalmouth a subdued England were not attacking, the Mancunian duo proved to be slightly less explosive than the Gallagher brothers.

Criticism is harsh. Supply was hardly in abundance. England’s first XI has been slated for its lack of ability to create chances from open play. Its second, the lively Danny Rose aside, appears to no better.

On Saturday, Spain dominated possession. In the first half tonight, it was the mighty Switzerland, commanding 61 per cent in a worrying 45 minutes. That said, there were half chances.

Early on, Welbeck timed his run well and got to Danny Rose’s corner first at the near post, but he failed to get a strong connection and the opportunity was wasted. It was hard not to imagine Kane burying it.

Rashford struck a long-range free-kick over the bar. Shortly before the break Welbeck, a scorer of unorthodox goals, tried an audacious flick from a tight angle.

That was about as good as it got. We hoped for more following the break. We got it when Kyle Walker’s 54th minute deep cross found Rashford lurking at the back post. Wythenshawe became Walthamstow, with the United man keeping his cool to slide a clinical volley past a previously untested Yann Sommer.

Gareth Southgate had insisted that tonight was not about the result. But on the hour mark Welbeck made way for Kane. You would imagine, somewhere in north London, an Argentinian may have launched a remote control at a television.

And so we had 60 minutes to ponder.

Welbeck did not show us anything new but Rashford’s cool head will have been a welcome sight for his manager.

Now, if his club manager can see fit to put him on the field every now and then, Southgate may have an option should the unthinkable come to pass.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
